Los Angeles, May 14, 2025, Grammy-nominated singer and Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey has been granted a temporary restraining order against her former boyfriend, YouTuber and rapper Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., professionally known as DDG. The order, issued by a Los Angeles judge, cites serious allegations of repeated physical, emotional, and verbal abuse throughout and after their relationship and aims to protect both Bailey and the couple’s one-year-old son, Halo.
The judge’s decision comes after Bailey filed legal documents detailing a series of disturbing incidents she claims have escalated since the couple’s split in October 2024. A hearing is scheduled for June 6, where the court will decide whether to extend the restraining order, potentially for up to five years.
A Pattern of Alleged Abuse
In her legal filing, Bailey, 25, described a harrowing pattern of mistreatment. “Throughout our relationship, Darryl has been and continues to be physically, verbally, emotionally, and financially abusive towards me,” she wrote. “I am seeking orders to protect myself and our son, Halo, from his ongoing abuse.”
One of the most shocking incidents allegedly occurred in January. According to Bailey, the two got into a heated altercation while she was securing their baby in a car seat. DDG, she claims, began verbally insulting her before the confrontation turned violent.
“We fought each other, wrestling and tussling,” Bailey said. “At one point, Darryl was pulling my hair. He then slammed my face on the steering wheel, causing my tooth to get chipped. I then stopped fighting back as I was in a lot of pain.”
Bailey’s legal team included photos in the filing, showing visible bruises and the damage to her tooth. These images have since surfaced in several U.S. media outlets.
Escalating Behavior and Alleged Stalking
The legal documents also describe how DDG’s behaviour allegedly intensified following their breakup. Bailey accuses him of entering her home without permission when she wasn’t there, later sending her a photo of her own bed, accompanied by a threatening text implying she was cheating on him.
A separate incident allegedly occurred when Bailey refused to allow her sick child to visit DDG. In response, she claims he berated her and then destroyed her Ring doorbell camera, which had recorded the altercation.
Worse yet, Bailey says she was physically assaulted during a moment when she tried to call a family member for help. According to her, DDG took her phone and slammed a car door on her while she was holding their baby.
Bailey says she reported this incident to police and has requested that the court prohibit DDG from possessing any firearms.
Social Media Harassment and Public Backlash
Bailey is also asking the court to prevent DDG from speaking about her on social media. “He claims I am withholding our son and that I am with other men. As a result, I then receive threats and hate on social media,” she said in the documents.
With millions of followers on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, DDG’s online influence is significant. Bailey alleges that his public accusations have incited harassment and hate messages, affecting her mental well-being and her safety.
Career Spotlight and Public Scrutiny
Bailey, best known for her role as Ariel in Disney’s 2023 live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, has risen to stardom both as an actress and singer. She originally found fame as part of the music duo Chloe x Halle, alongside her sister, before branching out as a solo artist. She’s also a five-time Grammy nominee and a former lead on the hit series Grown-ish.
DDG, 27, transitioned from a popular YouTube personality to a full-time music artist, releasing four studio albums since signing a record deal in 2018. Despite his success, his name has now become tied to this highly publicised legal drama.
Looking Ahead
The June 6 hearing will determine whether the restraining order should be extended. Until then, DDG is legally required to stay away from Bailey and their child. The judge has also barred him from possessing any weapons and may consider further restrictions depending on the outcome of the hearing.
As of now, DDG’s team has not issued a public comment regarding the restraining order or Bailey’s allegations.
This case adds to the broader conversation around domestic violence, particularly among high-profile figures. Bailey’s decision to go public with her experience underscores the importance of legal protection for survivors and the growing urgency to hold abusers accountable, regardless of fame or influence.
