The Final Four participants from the two Greenville Regionals are set, and the SEC are the queens of the court coming out of Greenville. The No. 1 overall seed South Carolina Gamecocks are headed to the Final Four for the third straight season, and are looking for a second straight national championship. Head coach Dawn Staley is looking for her third title at the helm of the Gamecocks — it would be her third in the past six seasons.
The Gamecocks are the No. 1 seed in the Greenville 1 Regional and won a defensive slugfest against UCLA in the Sweet 16, 59-43, and their length and athleticism were too much for for Maryland in a 86-75 Elite Eight win. The undefeated Gamecocks have won 42 straight games, and are looking to become the first unbeaten national champs since UConn went 38-0 in the 2015-16 season.
LSU, the No. 3 seed in the Greenville 2 Regional, is headed back to the Final Four for the first time since 2008, and the first time under Kim Mulkey who is in her second year in Baton Rouge. The Tigers won a tight game against Utah, 66-63, in the Sweet 16 and took down Miami in the Elite Eight. LSU is 32-2 on the season, the most recent of those losses coming in the SEC Tournament semifinals to Tennessee. Their only other loss this season? An 88-64 loss at South Carolina back on February 12.
The Tigers and Gamecocks wouldn’t meet until the national championship game as LSU takes on the winner of the Seattle 3 Regional and South Carolina plays Caitlin Clark and Iowa in one of the most anticipated college basketball games of the season in their Final Four matchup.
