The Indianapolis Colts took Anthony Richardson with the fourth overall pick thanks to the enticing bodily tools, now not on memoir of he’s a carried out product.

That notion used to be reinforced in Richardson’s first live spherical in opposition to an NFL defense.

The frail Florida quarterback had a small bit of every part in his first preseason open. He executed his first two makes an try to Isaiah McKenzie for transient positive factors. When he went assist to the McKenzie successfully for the third time, he sailed a dash off his assist foot and used to be picked.

There had been also some correct moments for the rookie. In opposition to the conclude of the main quarter, he had a beautiful deep ball that he dropped correct over the defender to Alec Pierce, despite the fact that the sophomore wasn’t able to direct the ball in.

In all, Richardson executed 7-of-12 passes for 72 yards and not utilizing a touchdowns and the interception. He also had two carries for seven yards.

It used to be the kind of performance that aligns with his scouting file. B/R’s Derrik Klassen infamous Richardson, “flashes high-level throws nonetheless (is) liable to about a peculiar misfires per sport.”

Limiting those misfires would possibly be key if Richardson goes to open early within the season. Gardner Minshew got here in and went 6-of-6 within the main half for 72 yards to shut out the main half.

Unusual head coach Shane Steichen educated newshounds he wished to open Richardson to seem, “the build he’s at.” As it appears to be like, he’s correct the build many pundits had him. A gifted prospect with a high ceiling and a lot of room to grow.

The Titans backup quarterback war used to be one in every of the more appealing storylines of the day. Mike Vrabel and his workers sat Ryan Tannehill and let the 2 younger quarterbacks fragment responsibilities for the day to audition for the backup job.

Both played successfully overall and made a case for themselves.

Malik Willis used to be 11-of-17 for 102 yards and an interception at halftime. That’s a marked development over what he gave the influence of in his rookie season. That’s more passing yards in a single half of action than he had in all three of his begins final one year.

Even his interception used to be a catchable ball that bounced off Josh Whyle’s fingers.

The fact that Willis threw the ball 17 occasions is an encouraging label of development. This time final one year, Vrabel used to be pissed off by Willis’ indecisiveness when it got here to throwing the football and he appears to be like to be to be more cheerful in that dwelling.

Given the fact that the Titans took Will Levis with a 2d-spherical pick, or now not it is annoying to examine Willis having a future with the Titans. However, this performance showed that he’s made actual enhancements and would possibly per chance be worth one other crew giving up a pick to continue his development.

Levis got off to a rough open. He executed his first dash before throwing a shut to-pick and taking sack on a three-and-out possession. Nonetheless he regarded to resolve in after that, changing on a third-and-long within the main half and ending 9-of-14 for 85 yards and an interception at the conclude of the game.

Both quarterbacks took too many sacks (four apiece), nonetheless Willis proved he’s now not a misplaced motive and Levis showed he would possibly per chance be a solid backup to Ryan Tannehill correct now.

That used to be Moore’s supreme purpose of the day as the starters had been rather restricted, nonetheless it undoubtedly used to be a survey at what he can for Fields and this offense. Darnell Mooney and Trot Claypool are good complimentary devices nonetheless Moore is a No. 1 receiver who has had success with less-than-ultimate quarterback scenarios.

Khalil Herbert also looked correct in restricted reps. He took one other straight forward cloak cloak dash for a 56-yard dwelling name.

Fields ended up going 3-of-3 for 129 yards and two touchdowns and not utilizing a interceptions.

Fields smooth needs to demonstrate that he also can fair furthermore be a downfield passer with consistency nonetheless Bears followers must be exasperated to seem the extent of execution and the added dimension that Moore goes to direct to the offense.

Bryce Younger’s first preseason play ended up being rather emblematic of his complete debut.

On 2d down, the Panthers got here out in an empty formation, the Jets responded with a line of defense stunt that brought rigidity rapid. Younger didn’t dread. He checked out his first learn before moving to the supreme facet of the area and handing over an correct ball to Adam Thielen as he took a shot from Solomon Thomas.

Younger’s processing, accuracy and expertise to tackle rigidity had been causes he used to be the No. 1 pick. In that regard, Younger did a great job of exhibiting those issues.

Nonetheless the overall performance of the offensive line must be a provide of reveal. Younger played for 3 drives before giving technique to Matt Corral. The rookie used to be sacked correct one time nonetheless constantly had rigidity in his face.

In total, the Jets had six quarterback hits within the main two quarters. Corral took two sacks within the main half.

The Jets had been one in every of the supreme dash-speeding groups within the league final season. They gave the influence of they had been in midseason develop, nonetheless the Panthers must shore up their dash security if they would possibly well care for the No. 1 pick wholesome all season.

No doubt one of many mammoth questions the Cowboys must answer to loyal thru the preseason is what the backfield goes to seem like with out Ezekiel Elliott.

Pollard overtook Elliott for the lead role final season, nonetheless the dilapidated smooth took masses of carries to care for Pollard contemporary.

Dan Graziano of ESPN reported the Cowboys smooth don’t look for Pollard as any individual whose going to present the likelihood to raise the backfield by himself:

“The Cowboys smooth look for Pollard as a participant they have gotten to be careful now to now not overwork if they would possibly well care for getting the supreme out of him, so I’d seek data from them to make employ of other backs alongside side him.”

With Pollard out of the lineup, the Cowboys other backs had a risk to demonstrate additionally they are able to fair grab a role within the offense.

    The outcomes had been uninspiring.

Rico Dowdle got essentially the most carries within the main half when the Jaguars 1’s and a pair of’s had been in. He had six carries nonetheless had correct 21 yards and seven of them got here on one raise. He did have some burst nonetheless also fumbled at the target line.

Malik Davis used to be even more unproductive with three yards on four carries. Dowdle used to be undoubtedly the simpler of the 2, he also had three receptions for 33 yards.

Rookie Deuce Vaughn added a spark within the 2d half. He broke off a 26-yarder and carried out with eight carries for 50 yards and a landing.

Perchance he’ll look for more early action within the 2d week of the preseason, or the Cowboys will most likely be a crew that appears to be like to be to add a dilapidated assist thru free company.

The stat line doesn’t continuously uncover the overall fable, especially within the preseason when working with a small sample size. Zay Flowers used to be a supreme example in his Baltimore Ravens debut.

The field ranking says the massive receiver had one raise for one yard, nonetheless he showed off blueprint more than those numbers would level to.

First off, here’s a stumble on at the one-yard speed. Even supposing he didn’t damage it, he made an athletic transfer correct to gain it assist to the street of scrimmage. He broke out a video sport-esque juke to shake the main defender.

The largest thing that Flowers did all evening used to be verify Peter King’s analysis of the electrical receiver. King named Flowers the “most impressive” rookie he had considered within the main six camps he visited this season, noting that cornerbacks needed to preserve him or intervene to care for him from getting the ball for NFL on NBC.

The Ravens first-crew offense (sans Lamar Jackson) scored on a pressure wherein Flowers drew an illegal employ of fingers and a defensive preserving penalty.

If it had been an actual sport or now not it is a stable guess the Ravens would have compelled the Eagles to continue covering Flowers and he would have had a grand bigger influence on the sector ranking.

Jalen Carter’s Quickness is Going to Translate

The NFL at neat would possibly well well have made a mistake allowing Jalen Carter to descend the overall technique to No. 9 within the draft. The Eagles didn’t necessarily need one other dominant dash-rusher, nonetheless Carter wasted no time in exhibiting his capability to turn out to be one.

Josh Johnson came all the blueprint thru out who he used to be on his first play. Carter crossed up Ben Cleveland on his first snap and got to Johnson with some unpleasant intentions to make his presence felt.

Carter’s dash speed numbers at Georgia weren’t discover-popping. He had correct six sacks in his final two seasons with the Bulldogs, nonetheless that’s why or now not it is a must-must seem at traits.

Bleacher Account’s Matt Holder infamous Carter’s capability to, “redirect and make the offensive lineman dash over if slanting places him out of region.”

It used to be correct to seem him set that on film correct from the jump. Nicely, that’s whereas you are an Eagles fan. For the opposite 31 groups within the league, or now not it is now not enormous news.

The Rams also had two Horned Frogs in action as successfully with interior offensive lineman Steve Avila and cornerback Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson every getting action.

Nonetheless it used to be Johnston and Davis who stood out as capability distinction-makers for the Chargers.

Johnston’s day started off slowly. He has had disorders with drops in coaching camp and had two on the crew’s opening pressure. Nonetheless he ended up getting issues assist now not off target, bringing in a landing dash from Easton Stick correct before halftime.

NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski Retires from ESPN to Become General Manager of Basketball at Alma Master

Known for his iconic “Woj Bombs” — the term coined for his relentless NBA breaking news and reporting — ESPN’s senior insider Adrian Wojnarowski delivered a personal bombshell on Wednesday. The renowned sports journalist announced his retirement from the news industry, signaling the end of an era for NBA coverage. Wojnarowski revealed that he would be stepping away from his role at ESPN to take on a new challenge: becoming the general manager of the men’s basketball team at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University. In a heartfelt message posted to social media, Wojnarowski reflected on his career and the decision to walk away from the fast-paced world of NBA news. “Thirty-seven years ago, the Hartford Courant gave me my first byline and I never stopped chasing the thrill of it all. This craft transformed my life, but I’ve decided to retire from ESPN and the news industry,” Wojnarowski wrote. “I understand the commitment required in my role and it’s an investment that I’m no longer driven to make. Time isn’t in endless supply, and I want to spend mine in ways that are more personally meaningful. I leave with overwhelming gratitude for countless mentors and colleagues, subjects and stories, readers and viewers. No one has benefitted more than me from the belief, trust, and generosity of others.”

Wojnarowski’s departure from ESPN marks the conclusion of a remarkable run at the sports network, where he had become synonymous with NBA breaking news. Since joining ESPN in 2017 as its senior NBA insider, Wojnarowski was the go-to source for fans, athletes, and insiders alike, often scooping major stories before anyone else. Before his time at ESPN, Wojnarowski built his reputation at Yahoo Sports, where he spent nearly a decade, and also had stints at The Record of New Jersey, The Fresno Bee, and The Waterbury (Conn.) Republican-American.

In response to the news of his retirement, ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro praised Wojnarowski’s work ethic and dedication to journalism. “I’ve known and admired Woj since we first worked together at Yahoo! in 2007. His work ethic is second to none. He’s extraordinarily talented and fearless. He has led the industry at ESPN, and his dedication to the craft and to fans is legendary,” Pitaro said in a statement. “While we will miss his daily output, we completely understand his decision to make a lifestyle change and slow down a bit. We know he will continue to thrive in this next chapter, and he has our collective gratitude and support.”

For Wojnarowski, this new chapter represents a return to his roots. A 1991 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Wojnarowski has maintained a deep connection with the school throughout his career. He was named the Alumnus of the Year in 2019 and inducted onto the Russell Jandoli School of Communication’s Wall of Distinguished Graduates, a testament to his enduring influence and contribution to journalism. Now, he will return to the university in a more direct role, helping to shape the future of its men’s basketball program.

“After all these years reporting on everyone’s teams, I’m headed back to my own,” Wojnarowski said. His role as general manager of the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team will involve advising the coaching staff on a range of critical issues, including name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities, managing the transfer portal, fundraising, and recruiting. In an era of rapid changes within college sports, including the rise of NIL and the ever-fluid nature of player transfers, Wojnarowski’s experience and strategic insight are expected to be invaluable to the Bonnies’ program.

“I’m thrilled and humbled to return to St. Bonaventure with an opportunity to serve the university, Coach Mark Schmidt, and our elite Atlantic 10 men’s basketball program,” Wojnarowski said in a statement. “In these changing times of college sports, I’m eager to join a championship program that combines high-level basketball, national television exposure, pro preparation, and NIL opportunities with an intimate, supportive educational environment.” His move to join the Bonnies’ staff underscores his deep commitment to the school and his enthusiasm for helping guide the basketball program through an increasingly complex college sports landscape.

Last season, the Bonnies finished with a respectable 20-13 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the competitive Atlantic 10 Conference. With Wojnarowski’s addition to the program’s leadership, there is hope that the team can continue to grow and excel in the coming years. His vast network of contacts within the basketball world, combined with his knowledge of the game’s inner workings, makes him a significant asset for St. Bonaventure.

The three-time National Sports Media Association’s National Sportswriter of the Year leaves behind a legacy as one of the most respected figures in sports journalism. Over the course of his career, Wojnarowski became known for his dogged pursuit of the truth, his unrelenting work ethic, and his ability to consistently break some of the biggest stories in basketball. For NBA fans, his “Woj Bombs” became a staple of the modern sports media landscape, often shaking the league with surprising trade news, free-agent signings, and coaching changes.

While Wojnarowski’s retirement from reporting marks the end of an era, his contributions to the sports world will continue in his new role. His upcoming introduction as St. Bonaventure’s basketball general manager is scheduled for next Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, where he will officially begin the next phase of his illustrious career.

Jordan Chiles Appeals ‘Unfair’ Decision That Cost Her Olympic Bronze Medal

Jordan Chiles Appeals 'Unfair' Decision That Cost Her Olympic Bronze Medal

Jordan Chiles, the talented American gymnast, has taken a significant step in her quest for justice by appealing a controversial decision that cost her an Olympic bronze medal. This move follows a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which upheld a challenge from the Romanian gymnastics team regarding a revision of her score in the floor exercise. Chiles had initially earned her first individual Olympic medal, only to see it slip away after CAS determined that her score should be altered based on the Romanian team’s objections. As a result, the bronze medal was awarded to Romania’s Ana Bǎrbosu, a decision that has left Chiles and her supporters feeling wronged and frustrated. In response, her legal team has filed an appeal to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, where CAS is headquartered, arguing that the entire process leading to the decision was fundamentally flawed and unfair.

Chiles’s attorneys have articulated their concerns clearly, asserting that CAS violated her “right to be heard.” They claim that crucial video evidence demonstrating that her inquiry was submitted on time was ignored during the proceedings. Furthermore, they allege that Chiles was not adequately informed about a potential conflict of interest involving the President of the CAS panel, raising serious questions about the integrity of the decision-making process. Maurice M. Suh, counsel for Chiles, emphasised that this situation presents a straightforward legal question for the international community: will they allow an athlete who has acted with integrity to be stripped of her medal due to systemic unfairness? Suh’s comments underscore the broader implications of this case, suggesting that the principles of fair play and justice must be upheld within the Olympic framework.

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has also voiced its unwavering support for Chiles. In a statement, they expressed determination to ensure she receives the recognition she deserves, citing significant errors made by CAS in handling her case. The USOPC criticised the oversight that led to the disregard of clear evidence supporting Chiles’s rightful bronze win. Their commitment to truth and justice in this matter reflects a growing sentiment among athletes and advocates who believe in accountability within the sporting world. Meanwhile, USA Gymnastics (USAG) has indicated that while it is not directly involved in the appeal at this stage, it is coordinating closely with Chiles and her legal team to provide necessary support. USAG plans to make supportive filings with the court to assist in the pursuit of justice for Chiles, highlighting a collective effort to address perceived injustices within the gymnastics community.

This situation has sparked conversations about the fairness of the arbitration processes used in high-stakes athletic competitions. Many observers are questioning whether these procedures adequately protect athletes’ rights and ensure equitable treatment. Chiles, known for her fierce competitive spirit and commitment to integrity, has become a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. Her case serves as a reminder that athletes must not only compete on the field but also navigate complex legal and institutional challenges off it. The support she has received from both the USOPC and USAG demonstrates a collective commitment to advocating for fairness in sports, echoing sentiments shared by fans and fellow athletes alike.

As Chile continues her legal battle, the outcome remains uncertain, but her determination to reclaim her medal has inspired many. The broader implications of her appeal may extend beyond her individual case, potentially influencing how disputes are handled within the Olympic framework. Athletes and advocates alike are watching closely, hoping for a resolution that honours the principles of fair play and justice. The case highlights the critical need for transparency and fairness in sports governance, emphasising that athletes should be treated with respect and dignity. As the appeals process unfolds, Chiles’s journey represents not just a fight for a medal but a broader struggle for equity in the world of competitive gymnastics. In an arena where the stakes are high and the pressures immense, Chiles’s commitment to holding organisations accountable reflects a growing movement within athletics, advocating for a system that prioritises fairness and integrity for all competitors.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner captured his second Grand Slam singles title with a victory over American Taylor Fritz at the US Open, winning 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.

Fritz, ranked No. 12 in the world, was aiming to become the first American man to secure a Grand Slam singles title in 21 years, with Andy Roddick being the last, having won the US Open in 2003.

Sinner, 23, extends his winning streak to 11 matches and follows his Australian Open triumph earlier this year. He joins Flavia Pennetta as one of the only Italian singles champions in US Open history.

In his post-match comments, Sinner expressed the deep significance of the win, reflecting on the challenges of recent times and dedicating the title to his ailing aunt. He acknowledged her vital role in his life and support during his formative years.

Fritz’s run to the final marked the first time an American man had reached a Grand Slam singles final since Roddick’s 2009 Wimbledon appearance. Although he fell short, Fritz, who had previously only reached the quarterfinals at majors, expressed gratitude for the support and vowed to continue working towards future success.

Carlos Alcaraz faced a stunning defeat in the US Open second round on Thursday, losing to Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. The Dutchman, ranked 74th in the world, triumphed over the 21-year-old Spaniard with scores of 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Alcaraz, the world No. 3 who recently claimed an Olympic silver medal and the Wimbledon title, struggled from the start and never found his rhythm, ending the match with 28 errors. Van de Zandschulp sealed his victory with an ace, marking his first win over a top-10 player at a Grand Slam and delivering one of the tournament’s biggest upsets in recent years. The crowd applauded the Dutchman’s remarkable performance as Alcaraz acknowledged him and waved to the audience before leaving the court.

In a post-match interview with ESPN, Van de Zandschulp expressed his astonishment. “It’s been an incredible evening,” he said. “Playing my first night session at Arthur Ashe with such an amazing crowd was unbelievable.”

He admitted to feeling nervous while closing out the match but emphasized the need for composure against top players. “You have to stay unbelievably calm and focused; otherwise, they will take advantage.”

Alcaraz’s defeat ends his 15-match unbeaten streak at the US Open and marks his earliest exit from a major since Wimbledon 2021. Van de Zandschulp, who has only progressed past the fourth round of a Grand Slam once, will face British 25th seed Jack Draper in the third round on Saturday.

Ballon d’Or Favorite Vinícius Jr Exclusive: ‘I Aim to Make History with Real Madrid’

Real Madrid superstar Vinícius Jr. is aiming for a historic season, revealing in an exclusive interview that he believes Los Blancos have the potential to achieve a historic treble. The Brazilian forward also expressed his desire to follow in the footsteps of his Brazilian idols by winning the Ballon d’Or.

In a conversation at his Madrid home, Vinícius expressed confidence in Real Madrid’s chances of excelling across all major competitions this season as they prepare to defend their Champions League title.

“Every year, our goal is to win every title we can,” Vinícius stated, reflecting on the club’s ambitions before their sixth European Super Cup victory against Atalanta.

Could Madrid Achieve Their First-Ever Treble?

Despite its numerous successes, Real Madrid has never achieved a European treble, comprising the Champions League, La Liga, and Copa del Rey. FC Barcelona remains the only Spanish club to have accomplished this feat, doing so in 2009 and 2015.

Vinícius Jr. explained why the treble has proven elusive, noting, “The Copa del Rey often disrupts our chances because it involves challenging teams throughout January, a period packed with games. This makes the cup competition particularly tricky.” While Vinícius emphasized that winning the club’s 16th Champions League is the squad’s top priority, he is also driven by the desire to “finally secure the treble.”

“The Champions League is the most challenging and prestigious competition, and it’s where Real Madrid always aims to excel,” he said. “Our fans expect us to win it, and so our focus is on achieving success in every competition we enter, with the ultimate goal of securing the treble.”

To truly grasp Vinícius Jr.’s impact over the past season, one needs to look at the numbers. His 15 league goals played a pivotal role in securing another Spanish title for Real Madrid. Additionally, his decisive goal in the Champions League final helped clinch Madrid’s second title in three years with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing for Real Madrid, so I cherish every moment as if it were the last,” Vinícius said. “Everyone wants to win with the best team in the world, and being able to score so many goals in important matches and contribute so significantly… I’m only 24, and I aim to continue this way for many more years, making history with this incredible team. Not everyone gets this opportunity, so I emphasize savoring every moment in this jersey.”

Despite missing two months of the 2023/24 season from November to January, Vinícius ended the campaign as Madrid’s top scorer, with 24 goals and 11 assists.

Dreams of Gold

With his ability to deliver in crucial moments and impressive statistics throughout the season for one of the world’s top clubs, it’s no surprise that Vinícius Jr. is the favorite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or, awarded to the best player in the world.

For Vinícius, claiming the award represents more than just personal achievement; it’s about honoring his Brazilian heritage and joining the ranks of his country’s greatest soccer stars. He aims to follow in the footsteps of legends like Marta, Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, and Kaká, all of whom have been recognized as the best in the world at various points in their careers.

“Marta is a true icon in women’s football. I deeply admire her for elevating the sport and making women’s football as respected as it deserves to be. She’s a pioneer, much like Pelé and Ayrton Senna are to Brazil,” Vinícius said.

He added, “For the men’s game, Kaká, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo are my role models. Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, in particular, are close to me and consistently encourage me to strive for the Ballon d’Or.”

Vinícius also shared that he has recently spent time training with Ronaldo Nazário, receiving personal guidance from the legendary forward.

“I recently trained at Ronaldo’s house in Ibiza, and he advised me, ‘Spend a few more days training here, and you’ll be closer to winning the Ballon d’Or.’ These are players who have achieved extraordinary things, and competing for the Ballon d’Or and winning an award that they have won would be truly incredible.”

The New Galácticos Era

Teammates Jude Bellingham and the newly signed Kylian Mbappé will be Vinícius Jr.’s primary rivals for the Ballon d’Or in October, as this latest version of Real Madrid boasts exceptional talent across the board.

Despite Mbappé being a key contender for football’s top honor, Vinícius is thrilled to have the former PSG star join the Spanish giants. “The team has been very strong for a long time,” he said.

“With Mbappé’s arrival, people are talking about the potential for us to become unstoppable, but for now, we need to focus on having great training sessions and quickly building our understanding on the field.”

Vinícius, who has long admired Mbappé from afar, is excited about playing alongside the World Cup winner. He expressed his admiration for Mbappé’s style and achievements, saying, “I love how he plays and I’m really looking forward to what we can achieve this season. He’s joining us after scoring many goals and winning numerous titles, and he’s coming to the club he has always dreamed of playing for—Real Madrid.”

“God willing, Mbappé will score as many goals for us as he did with his previous team and the national team, and hopefully even more with us,” Vinícius said.

While Vinícius assisted on the opening goal and Mbappé scored in his official debut for Los Blancos during a 2-0 UEFA Super Cup victory, Madrid stumbled in their La Liga opener against a determined Mallorca side, settling for a 1-1 draw away from home. This result highlighted the need for the team to develop better cohesion before reaching their peak performance.

Despite the setback in Son Moix and experiencing some early struggles in their home opener against Real Valladolid—where they eventually secured a 3-0 win—the stage is set for what promises to be an exceptionally successful season for Madrid.

Focused on Achieving Success with Madrid

Recently, there have been rumors suggesting that Vinícius Jr. was offered an astonishing $1 billion to move to Saudi Arabia, similar to speculation about his new teammate Mbappé in July 2023.

Despite the buzz, the Brazilian star made his future intentions clear: “I always strive to be among the best, and with each passing day at Real Madrid, I grow more confident.”

“I’ve already won two Champions Leagues, and I play alongside teammates who have each won six titles—like Dani Carvajal. Their experience motivates us daily to push beyond our limits andshows that anything is possible with our current team shows that anything is possible with our current team.

gettyimages-2155637092

Achieving two Champions League victories in three years was incredibly challenging. Staying at the top level is even harder, so my goal is to maintain this level of performance for a long time and win as many Champions League titles as Carvajal, Luka Modrić, Nacho, and Toni Kroos, who have each won six.

We might have one of the best teams for the coming decade, and now it’s up to us to demonstrate our capability on the pitch. With each game, my teammates and I are working towards winning even more titles for Real Madrid.”

Design Unveiled for Grand Stade Hassan II: A Future Mega-Stadium for the 2030 World Cup

Published

on

The final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup is just under six years away, and the design for the stadium hoping to host the grand event has finally been unveiled.

The Grand Stade Hassan II, located in El Mansouria, Morocco—one of the three co-hosting countries alongside Spain and Portugal—is being hailed as potentially “the largest football stadium in the world.” Designed by Oualolou + Choi and Populous, it aims for a staggering capacity of 115,000.

Set on a 100-hectare (about 247 acres) site north of Casablanca, the stadium’s design is inspired by a “moussem,” a traditional communal tent, with an aluminum lattice covering the stands and tiered gardens. The stadium will feature a botanical garden on the ground floor. According to Tarik Oualalou, design principal and founding partner at Oualolou + Choi, the design is deeply rooted in Moroccan culture, combining traditional elements with modern expressions.

The stadium’s layout is tailored for World Cup events, with nearly 30,000 seats dedicated to general admission fans at each end and the central area reserved for boxes, hospitality, VIPs, and VVIPs.

“This will be a truly iconic venue for Morocco and football, becoming one of the world’s great stadia,” said Christopher Lee, managing director at Populous, EMEA. The Grand Stade Hassan II will face competition from other massive stadiums, such as the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, which holds 132,000 spectators, and the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, with a capacity of 114,000.

Populous, known for designing the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Emirates Stadium, is behind this ambitious project. After multiple unsuccessful bids, Morocco secured its place as a co-host for the 2030 World Cup. The final decision on which venue will host the final is still pending, though Real Madrid’s renovated Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is a strong contender.

Preparations at the site outside Casablanca are underway, with Oualolou + Choi and Populous working to bring this grand vision to life in the coming years.

Success at Paris Olympics Sparks Optimism for Men’s College Gymnastics Coaches

Published

on

2024-07-29t224107z-470550051-mt1usatoday23858243-rtrmadp-3-olympics-gymnastics

Men’s gymnastics in the U.S. has been struggling for decades, with numerous high school and college programs shutting down, including notable Big Ten programs like the University of Minnesota and University of Iowa, which were cut in 2021.

However, the U.S. team’s performance at the Paris Olympics, composed entirely of NCAA gymnasts, has renewed optimism among college coaches. The Olympians hailed from Stanford, the University of Michigan, Penn State, and the defunct University of Minnesota program. Despite representing a fifth of all current programs, this is a small fraction of the 15 active programs—12 in Division I and three in Division III.

A bright spot for the sport appeared in the fall of 2021, when Simpson College and Greenville University announced new men’s gymnastics programs. This was a notable development, as no new teams had been added in 60 years. Penn State Head Coach Randy Jepson expressed enthusiasm for this momentum.

Though Simpson and Greenville are smaller Division III schools compared to large Division I institutions like the University of Michigan, their competitive spirit is evident. Simpson Head Coach Colin Payne emphasized focusing on their own performance rather than comparing facilities.

Despite their size, Simpson and Greenville have already shown competitive prowess, with Greenville ranking higher than William & Mary and Army at the end of the past season.

The early success of new gymnastics programs is promising, but historical data suggests that winning alone may not be enough to ensure a program’s longevity. Eleven programs that once won national championships have since been discontinued.

Financial stability often determines a program’s survival. While sports like football and basketball typically generate revenue, gymnastics faces unique challenges. With recent changes in NCAA policy—such as the introduction of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals and student-athletes being treated more like employees—there are new opportunities for gymnastics. This shift follows California’s 2019 law allowing athletes to earn endorsement money and a landmark 2021 U.S. Supreme Court decision permitting education-related payments, which have redefined college sports.

Simpson College Head Coach Colin Payne sees potential in merging this private enterprise model with college athletics. He believes that the specialization and existing privatized model in gymnastics could benefit from NIL opportunities, which are less common in other sports.

The recent Olympic success provides an additional boost. “In my coaching career, this is probably one of the most optimistic points for me,” Payne told CNN. “We have genuine interest now, and we hope to leverage the momentum from the Olympics and the success of athletes like Stephen Nedoroscik.”

Nedoroscik, who won bronze for the U.S. in the team event and on the pommel horse, has already had a significant impact on the sport. His success has sparked unprecedented interest in his hometown gym, with many parents eager to enroll their sons. His recent appearance on the Tonight Show also highlights the growing visibility of gymnastics.

The pommel horse specialist surprised many by making the Team USA squad, given he competes in only one of the six events in men’s gymnastics. However, his selection proved invaluable as his performance was crucial in securing bronze in the team event, alongside his individual achievements.

While Nedoroscik is technically exceptional, it’s his distinctive personality that has truly captivated the public. Known for his thick-rimmed glasses—leading the internet to nickname him the “Clark Kent” of Team USA—he also stands out for his sideline meditation and love for Rubik’s cubes.

His college coach, Randy Jepson, views Nedoroscik as a prime example of a gymnast who thrives in the sport. “There are many boys who might not fit into traditional sports like basketball, football, or soccer. They may see the world differently, be more cerebral, and still seek athletic opportunities,” Jepson said. “Gymnastics offers that chance due to its unique challenges and excitement, providing a fun and fulfilling experience for those who are a bit different.”

Other coaches agree with this perspective, recognizing that gymnastics appeals to a specific type of athlete who needs programs available at all stages of development to nurture their interest.

“Many talented gymnasts, who might not reach Olympic levels but have significant potential, step away from the sport once they reach high school because there aren’t enough opportunities,” Payne noted.

To build on the success of the Olympic team, there must be opportunities for gymnasts from youth through high school and into college. “In gymnastics, the Olympics is essentially the professional level,” Payne added.

While many elite female gymnasts turn professional right out of high school, most members of the U.S. men’s national team are currently in college or recent graduates. This means that fans can see these world-class athletes compete in NCAA meets every weekend without having to travel to Paris.

“The level of gymnastics displayed at NCAA championships, and even at conference meets, is on par with Olympic-level performances,” Jepson said.

Despite competing against one another, teams understand they share the common goal of growing the sport. “Men’s gymnastics is a collective effort, and it’s moving in a positive direction,” Greenville University Head Coach Zach Peters told CNN Sport. “It’s rare to see such strong relationships among head coaches.”

The sport still has room for growth, but the recent success of Team USA offers hope for a brighter future.

“Fans are witnessing the best gymnasts competing every weekend during the collegiate season,” Jepson said. “They’re seeing top-tier performances consistently.”

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, both former college basketball stars, are now making significant strides in the WNBA. On Sunday, Clark led the Indiana Fever to a commanding 92-75 victory over the Seattle Storm, while setting a new league record.

Clark scored 23 points and recorded her 225th assist during the game, surpassing Ticha Penicheiro’s long-standing record for the most assists by a rookie in WNBA history. Clark, who tops the league with an average of 8.3 assists per game, expressed her gratitude for breaking the record held by Penicheiro, a revered figure in the sport.

The historic assist occurred in the second quarter, and Penicheiro celebrated the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), praising Clark’s achievement. “Records are meant to be broken…it shows growth and evolution. Can’t think of a better player to break it,” Penicheiro wrote. The Fever also shared a video of Penicheiro congratulating Clark, who ended the game with nine assists and a season total of 232.

In her standout rookie season, Caitlin Clark has already set several WNBA records, including becoming the first rookie to achieve a triple-double and setting a new high with 19 assists in a single game. This past Sunday, Clark added another milestone by surpassing Ticha Penicheiro’s record for most assists by a rookie, finishing with 232 assists and leading the Indiana Fever to a 92-75 victory over the Seattle Storm.

Meanwhile, Angel Reese is making waves of her own. In a game on Sunday, Reese scored 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in an 86-68 loss to the Phoenix Mercury, becoming the fastest player in WNBA history to record 20 double-doubles in a single season. Reese reached this achievement in just 27 games and is now only two double-doubles away from tying Tina Charles’ rookie record for the most double-doubles in a season, as noted by ESPN. Earlier this season, Reese also set the record for most consecutive double-doubles.

As the WNBA resumes play after the Olympic break, both rookies are poised to continue their record-breaking performances. Clark’s Indiana Fever (13-15) will next face the Minnesota Lynx, while Reese’s Chicago Sky (11-16) will take on the Connecticut Sun. With their exceptional play, it’s clear that Clark and Reese will keep making history this season.
