The brooding halls of Nevermore Academy are set to reopen their doors as Netflix officially announces the return of Wednesday, one of its most iconic and record-breaking series. The second season of the gothic comedy-mystery, which took the streaming world by storm, is gearing up for a dramatic comeback  and this time, it’s bringing a few new and intriguing faces along.

In an announcement that thrilled fans worldwide, Netflix confirmed that the highly anticipated second season will be released in two parts. The first half will drop on August 6, with the remaining episodes following on September 3. This staggered release strategy reflects Netflix’s efforts to maintain momentum, build anticipation, and keep its subscriber base engaged over a longer stretch.

Returning to the eerie, enigmatic world of Nevermore Academy, Jenna Ortega once again dons the black and white threads of the beloved Wednesday Addams. Ortega, who won universal praise for her sharp, sardonic portrayal, expressed her excitement about stepping back into the character’s dark shoes. “To play someone who’s so much more intelligent than you will ever be, it’s quite funny and strange and enjoyable,” she remarked during the trailer launch.

The new trailer, released fittingly on a Wednesday, gives fans a taste of what’s to come. It opens with a classic Addams-style twist: Wednesday unloading a chaotic arsenal — knuckle duster, cattle prod, several knives, and even the iconic disembodied hand, Thing  while passing through airport security. A humorous jab is made when the security guard questions a tube of sunscreen, hinting at Wednesday’s well-known aversion to anything bright or cheerful.

But it’s not just familiar faces we’ll be seeing this season.

Veteran actress Joanna Lumley has joined the cast as Hester Frump, Wednesday’s eccentric grandmother and her newest confidante. Known for her commanding presence and comedic brilliance, Lumley’s character promises to be a dynamic addition to the Addams family lore. “She nailed every single line,” said co-creator Miles Millar, who praised Lumley’s arrival as “perfect and hilarious.” The actress herself described the set as “intoxicating” and seemed especially delighted by the chance to wear multiple oversized wigs — a signature touch in true Addams fashion.

Another major addition is the ever-versatile Steve Buscemi, who takes on the role of Barry Dort, Nevermore’s new principal. A figure shrouded in mystery, Dort appears to have secrets of his own. Buscemi, known for his offbeat characters in classics like Fargo and Reservoir Dogs, described Principal Dort as someone who is deeply passionate about the school and its community of outcasts. “Something about him is not right, but he loves the school,” he hinted.

Also joining the Nevermore ranks is Pugsley Addams, played by Isaac Ordonez. This season sees Wednesday’s younger brother enrol at the academy, an experience executive producer Tim Burton describes as being an “outcast among outcasts.” With the Addams family’s presence at Nevermore growing stronger — including Morticia and Gomez having more screen time on campus — it’s safe to expect even more macabre antics and familial chaos.

The trailer also teases moments that are quintessentially Addams  from a tea party for dolls to Wednesday’s dry reflections on crime scenes. Her line, “Wherever there’s murder and mayhem, you will always find an Addams,” encapsulates the tone of the upcoming season perfectly.

Fans have also started speculating about a potential cameo from pop superstar Lady Gaga. The trailer’s mention of “mayhem” has fuelled rumours, especially following Gaga’s release of an album titled Chromatica: Mayhem. Though nothing has been confirmed, such a cameo would certainly add an extra layer of intrigue and spectacle to the show.

Netflix has a lot riding on Wednesday’s second season. The first installment was a historic hit, earning its place as the most-watched show in the platform’s history. The gothic stylings, sharp humor, and fresh take on the Addams Family universe resonated with audiences around the globe. Ortega’s performance, combined with Tim Burton’s signature aesthetic, helped craft a show that felt both nostalgic and entirely new.

With new mysteries to unravel, fresh characters to love (or fear), and more of that deliciously dark Addams humour, Wednesday Season 2 is poised to dominate the streaming charts once again. Whether it’s navigating twisted hallways of Nevermore or dealing with an ever-complicated family dynamic, one thing is certain: Wednesday Addams is back, and she’s just getting started.
