Grading Every NHL Personnel’s 2023 Draft Class

0 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: (L-R) Leo Carlsson, 2d overall select by the Anaheim Ducks, Connor Bedard, first overall select by the Chicago Blackhawks, and Adam Fantilli, third overall select by the Columbus Blue Jackets, pose for a picture at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft - Round One at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. All americans likes to hype up the draft every yr, however the 2023 class is the truth is the finest the league has considered in some time.

Diverse teams will lumber away Nashville having performed a vibrant job reinforcing the group or even building it anew. Others will rue the selections that were made as they have an effect on the crew negatively for years to near. The NHL is a nil-sum league, because the success of one crew capacity the failure of one other and vice versa.

Grading the draft is no longer finest exact about who obtained the finest gamers. It’s about who did the finest with what they’d. What teams maximized the expertise that became obtainable when they were on the clock? That is what we’re aiming to measure and analyze.

Here are how all 32 NHL teams graded out at the 2023 NHL draft.

Anaheim Ducks

1 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Leo Carlsson stands onstage with crew proprietor Henry Samueli (L) and crew personnel after being selected 2d overall by the Anaheim Ducks at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft - Round One at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Dave Sandford/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Dave Sandford/NHLI through Getty Photos

Leo Carlsson has excessive odds of fixing correct into a predominant-line NHL heart. He’s a fabulous prospect and desires to be a gargantuan section of what is having a perceive to be a substantial crew in Anaheim down the motorway. Nonetheless Adam Fantilli became the finest participant obtainable at 2d overall.

I felt that each one three of their 2d-spherical picks were reaches. Coulson Pitre became factual value in spherical three, though.

Anaheim is a factual example of the nuance required in undergoing an enlighten devour this one. At the pause of the day, the Ducks are leaving with a ton of expertise. Nonetheless did they maximize the value obtainable to them? I’d argue no longer.

    Grade: C

Arizona Coyotes

2 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Dmitriy Simashev stands onstage with crew personnel after being selected sixth overall by the Arizona Coyotes at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft - Round One at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Jeff Vinnick/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Jeff Vinnick/NHLI through Getty Photos

Despite the indisputable truth that Dimitriy Simashev has the expertise to at final become a major-pairing defenseman, he hasn’t proven famous offense but and sixth overall is a dangerous converse to lift him given how stacked this draft class is. It’s miles a identical case with Daniil Nonetheless, who is 6’5″ and intensely talented however extraordinarily raw. The Coyotes took him 12th overall, whereas I believed he became a more acceptable match within the 20s.

The Coyotes took goaltender Michal Hrabal in Round 2. He’s 6’6″ and talented, however American Trey Augustine became the finest goaltender on my board.

The leisure of the draft went in a identical system for Arizona. That is to reveal, the crew went gargantuan. High is presumably the most overrated quality in hockey, and the Coyotes maintain leaned into it the last few years at the expense of the whole lot else.

    Grade: D+

Boston Bruins

3 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Beckett Hendrickson celebrates after being selected 124th overall select by the Boston Bruins at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

The Bruins weren’t the most vigorous participant at the draft, having emptied the tank to lumber all-in on a 2023 Stanley Cup trip. They did no longer select till Round 3 when they reached tantalizing for USHL ahead Christopher Pelosi.

Fourth-spherical select Beckett Hendrickson became a famous better acquisition. He’s 6’2 and knows the wonderful technique to spend his dimension. He has factual passing capability and works tantalizing. He has a risk to become the sort of rugged backside-six ahead Bostonians admire.

Boston did not precisely maintain famous to work with, however finest one select stands out as a extreme NHL prospect.

    Grade: C-

Buffalo Sabres

4 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Zach Benson, Thirteenth overall select by the Buffalo Sabres, poses onstage with crew personnel after being drafted within the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Dave Sandford/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Dave Sandford/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Sabres landed winger Zach Benson, fifth on B/R’s Noteworthy Board, at Thirteenth overall. This could occasionally be pleasing if he doesn’t compose it as a major-six winger within the NHL. That alone is ample to have an effect on the Sabres a factual grade here.

Nonetheless I admire the leisure of their draft as wisely. Anton Wahlberg and Maxim Strbak are each 2d-spherical values, though I receive no longer order either is a lift whatsoever. Ethan Miedema is precisely the sort of swing for upside teams also can fair quiet stamp in spherical four.

The Sabres already had a prime prospect pool. It’s now even better they assuredly’re going to maintain replacement pieces to work with also can fair quiet they perceive to compose a exchange that gets them NHL-ready expertise as they perceive to push into the playoffs.

    Grade: A

Calgary Flames

5 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Samuel Honzek is selected by the Calgary Flames with the 16th overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

The resolution of Samuel Honzek at 16th overall became fair a little underwhelming, though there are others who disagree. He’s gargantuan and has substantial arms for his dimension, however I wretchedness that his inability to play at a excessive trip could perhaps perhaps limit him to a third-line NHL feature.

I devour their 2d and third-spherical picks loads more. Étienne Morin, taken 48th overall, became if truth be told one of many finest offensive defensemen in this draft class. Aydar Suniev had 90 aspects in 40 BCHL games and has the tools to become a major-nine offensive winger within the NHL if he improves his skating.

    Grade: B

Carolina Hurricanes

6 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Head coach Rod Brind'Amour of the Carolina Hurricanes gifts Bradly Nadeau with a jersey after being selected with the 30th overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

Surprise, surprise. The Hurricanes’ drafted small forwards with upside.

Bradly Nadeau, taken 30th overall, is largely one of many finest shooters within the draft. Kind no longer be taken aback if he’s a 30-plus plot scorer within the NHL one day.

Winger Jayden Perron, who lasted till the pause of the third-spherical, is a borderline first-line expertise who dropped because he is 5’8″.

The leisure of the draft followed that ethos, roughly. The Hurricanes are heavily invested in analytics and predicament that making an are trying to derive the next Johnny Gaudreau or Jonathan Marchessault holds more reason than making an are trying so that it’s good to perhaps add fourth-line penalty killers.

    Grade: A

Chicago Blackhawks

7 of 32

NASHVILLE, TN - JUNE 28: Fans of the Chicago Blackhawks sporting Connor Bedard jerseys gain on the plaza of Bridgestone Enviornment earlier than the principle spherical of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft, held on June 28, 2023, at Bridgestone Enviornment in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Danny Murphy/Icon Sportswire through Getty Photos)

Danny Murphy/Icon Sportswire through Getty Photos

I point out, perceive, ping-pong balls fell the Blackhawks’ capacity they assuredly obtained to draft the finest prospect since Connor McDavid. They’ll maintain forfeited their closing picks and quiet near away the draft’s gargantuan winner.

They accented that 2d with completely different savvy moves, too. Oliver Moore became ninth on B/R’s Noteworthy Board. He dropped to Chicago at 19. Prick Lardis, thirty 2d on our board, became snapped up at 67th overall. Those are the finest some precise Day Two acquisitions. It became a substantial two days for the rebuilding Blackhawks.

    Grade: A+

Colorado Avalanche

8 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Mikhail Gulyayev, Thirty first overall select by the Colorado Avalanche, poses for a portrait after being drafted within the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

With no picks in rounds two, three, and 4, the weight of this draft for Colorado exclusively hinged on what they did with two first-spherical picks.

They did wisely with each. Calum Ritchie, who became twenty first on B/R’s board, became snagged at 27. Ritchie is largely one of many finest gamers in this draft class when it comes to his far flung from the puck. He constantly knows the wonderful technique to space himself to abet the puck, receive originate, shut down lanes, decrease off the opposition’s alternate choices, and so on. He additionally has factual arms and could perhaps perhaps fair every at times hit the highlight reel with a toe-plod past a defender or a breakaway circulate. He could perhaps perhaps not be a famous particular person within the NHL, however he’s the sort of participant who can play on a famous particular person’s line and maximize his output.

Subsequent, Colorado took defenseman Mikhail Gulyayev at 30. The Russian defenseman ranked 20th on B/R’s Noteworthy Board. He’s a fabulous skater who can circulate the puck up the ice each with his feet and passing. Despite his smaller stature, he’s a factual one-on-one defender. He’ll need some time to shine his recreation however he has a major-four upside as an offensive defenseman.

The Avalanche obtained precise value out of every of their first-spherical picks.

    Grade: A

Columbus Blue Jackets

9 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Adam Fantilli, third overall select by the Columbus Blue Jackets, poses for a portrait after being drafted within the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Blue Jackets accumulate the enlighten of getting the most bang for their buck. They maybe could perhaps perhaps not judge their excellent fortune when Adam Fantilli, a predominant-spherical select in most drafts, became obtainable at third overall.

Gavin Brindley, who is Fantilli’s linemate at Michigan, went to Columbus at thirty fourth overall. He became Twenty ninth on our board.

William Whitelaw has first-spherical expertise, however will need replacement complex admire and persistence in his construction. We notorious him as if truth be told one of many finest gamers obtainable after the principle spherical and Columbus grabbed him at 66th.

At final, Andrew Strathmann is a excessive-upside defenseman who is underbaked. He has No. 4/5 upside as a defenseman and that’s the explanation substantial value for spherical four. Even the closing select of the draft,. Tyler Peddle, is a real NHL prospect.

    Grade: A+

Dallas Stars

10 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Tristan Bertucci poses for a portrait after being selected 61st overall by the Dallas Stars at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Stars did loads with fair a little on the 2d day of the NHL Draft.

Tristan Bertucci is a excessive-upside offensive defenseman drafted at 61st overall. He’s a gargantuan well-liked among knowledge lovers.

Aram Minnetian became the finest defenseman on the US National Personnel Construction program and I cherished his performances at the U18 World Championship. He is a factual puck-transferring defenseman and he became a borderline 2d-spherical value. The Stars obtained him two rounds later.

Most teams will lumber away Nashville having accumulated more expertise, however the Stars did shut to the finest they could perhaps given the keep apart they were slotted to draft.

    Grade: B

Detroit Red Wings

11 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: (L-R) Trey Augustine celebrates with Andrew Gibson after being selected by the Detroit Red Wings at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

It’s miles a mixed rep for Detroit.

Nate Danielson became taken too early at ninth overall. He’s gargantuan, defends wisely and skates wisely for his dimension, however his arms are moderate and he also can fair prime out as a third-line heart.

I did devour the resolution of Axel Sandin-Pellikka at 14th overall famous better. The offensive defenseman has some quirks in his recreation he desires to desire out. He desires to become famous better defensively and compose better selections with the puck. Nonetheless he’s a substantial skater who makes highly expert plays within the offensive zone and could perhaps perhaps become a major-four defenseman.

They invested too quickly on low-upside defensemen in Round 2, however the one selection that stands out is Trey Augustine. The 6’1″ goaltender doesn’t maintain the dimension of the two goaltenders drafted before him, however his skating and reflexes are famous better. He became the give up goaltender on my draft board.

I additionally admire the gamble on crafty Swede Noah Dower-Nilsson within the third spherical.

    Grade: C+

Edmonton Oilers

12 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Beau Akey locations on a hat after being selected 56th overall by the Edmonton Oilers at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft - Rounds 2-7 at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Jeff Vinnick/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Jeff Vinnick/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Oilers finest had one select within the principle 5 rounds of the draft however they obtained it completely excellent.

Beau Akey is a tender-skating defenseman who creates zone exits out of thin air and likes to affix play offensively. He has work to receive to become a risk with the puck however he became if truth be told one of many finest gamers obtainable after the principle spherical and the Oilers obtained him at 56th overall. Akey has palpable prime-four upside, which is more than will doubtless be said about a handful of defenseman taken before him in this draft.

    Grade: A

Florida Panthers

13 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Gracyn Sawchyn talks with regular manager Bill Zito after being selected 63rd overall by the Florida Panthers at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft - Rounds 2-7 at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Jeff Vinnick/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Jeff Vinnick/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Panthers selected Gracyn Sawchyn with their first select of the draft at Sixtieth overall. B/R had him ranked because the 30th participant in this draft class. The guts is amazingly expert with the puck however became buried at the wait on of a resolution of older gamers on the Seattle Thunderbirds depth chart. I order he takes off subsequent season with more icetime and teams feel sorry about letting him tumble this far.

They additionally selected about a defensemen who skate and transition the puck wisely in Albert Wikman (spherical three) and Luke Coughlin (spherical 6). Those are the types of gamers who’re inclined to become depth defensemen within the novel NHL.

It’s vibrant work by the Panthers’ scouting workers.

    Grade: B+

Los Angeles Kings

14 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Koehn Ziemmer poses for a portrait after being selected 78th overall by the Los Angeles Kings at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Kings took Jakub Dvorak, a truly factual shutdown defenseman with restricted offensive upside, too early. He became more of a third or fourth-spherical value.

Nonetheless then they drafted Koehn Ziemmer, who will must maintain long past early within the 2d spherical, within the center of spherical three. Ziemmer is a pure plot-scorer who works tantalizing however desires to receive lean and toughen his skating. He has a heart-six upside within the NHL. Change the keep apart Ziemmer and Dvorak were drafted and no-one blinks.

I additionally admire Matthew Mania within the sixth spherical. He’s a truly factual skater and moves the puck wisely. He can maintain long past in spherical three or four.

    Grade: B

Minnesota Wild

15 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Charlie Stramel, twenty first overall select by the Minnesota Wild, poses for a portrait after being drafted within the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

I groaned when the Wild took Charlie Stramel at twenty first overall. He’s 6’3″ and is a risk physically. He additionally has factual arms for his dimension. Nonetheless he became so aged to dominating junior-stage gamers from a younger age.

Reality hit at some level of his freshman season at Wisconsin, the keep apart he became lacking within the more cerebral substances of the sport and maintain change into uncovered. He’ll compose the NHL as a backside-six ahead and a factual one. Nonetheless he will must maintain long past in spherical two.

The Wild then made up for it by drafting Riley Heidt, twenty seventh on our board, at the initiate of the third spherical. Heidt is largely one of many most talented offensive gamers in this draft however his play far flung from the puck is a multitude. Still, he’s value a swing on the upside.

    Grade: B-

Montreal Canadiens

16 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: David Reinbacher is selected by the Montréal Canadiens with the fifth overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

Carey Imprint’s flubbing of the announcement of the Canadiens’ fifth-overall select became acceptable. David Reinbacher is a truly factual defenseman who showed wisely against mavens in Switzerland. He’s gargantuan, he skates wisely, and he transitions the puck. Nonetheless he has no longer proven the offensive upside to give an explanation for a range within the give up-ten, let alone prime-5. The Habs passed on capability stars in pronounce to draft a participant who looks destined for a 2d-pairing feature.

Goaltender Jacob Fowler became a factual bet in spherical three. He’s a talented goaltender who can become even better by bettering his skating. Nonetheless the injury is carried out. The draft offers no ensures however one lift I’m willing to keep apart my chips at the wait on of is that Habs fans will lift into fable the principle spherical years from now, and no longer with nostalgia.

    Grade: D

Nashville Predators

17 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: (L-R) Kalan Lind, forty sixth overall select, and Felix Nilsson, forty third overall select, of the Nashville Predators pose for a portrait at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

Barry Trotz told the Predators’ scouting workers to “swing for the fences” they assuredly did.

Matthew Wood is 6’3″ and if truth be told one of many most talented gamers within the draft when it comes to having the puck on his stick. It can perhaps be a stretch to name him the next Tage Thompson, however their builds are very identical. Nashville drafted him 15th overall. He became 11th on B/R’s board.

Tanner Molendyk, drafted twenty seventh overall, did no longer compose our prime-32 board, however he became strongly thought about for it. He’s an fabulous skater who moves the puck up the ice extraordinarily wisely. As it stands, he looks to be like devour a major-four shutdown and transition defenseman. If he can add some more offense to his recreation? Search for out.

Nashville additionally made some factual day-two bets. I devour forwards Jesse Kiiskanen and Joey Willis in rounds three and 4, respectively. They each play excellent two-capacity games that could perhaps lead to careers as backside-six forwards.

    Grade: A-

Still Jersey Devils

18 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Lenni Hameenaho poses for a portrait after being selected 58th overall by the Still Jersey Devils at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Devils maintain presumably the finest team of younger gamers within the league, however this draft became no longer their vibrant 2d.

2d-spherical select Lenni Hämeenaho played wisely in Finland’s prime league, which is difficult for a 17-yr-broken-down. He’s a truly cerebral ahead who makes factual selections and finds himself within the fabulous spots. His offensive upside is proscribed, though. He’s no longer the worst select at 61st overall, however they did lumber away upside on the board.

Cam Squires is an analytics select, as his advance level-per-recreation output within the QMJHL is more healthy than the inputs of his recreation; mediocre skating and hockey sense.

Fling Cheslock is a physical defenseman who can address the puck competently.

The Devils’ gargantuan work this offseason could perhaps perhaps not be at the draft desk. They’re gearing up for a opponents window.

    Grade: C+

Still York Islanders

19 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Danny Nelson poses for a portrait after being selected forty ninth overall by the Still York Islanders at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Islanders made decent work of unfortunate circumstances. The crew traded what would become the 17th-overall select to Vancouver in return for Bo Horvat; a decision that looks regrettable now.

Still, they obtained factual value with their first select of the draft. Danny Nelson became a fringe first/2d-spherical value whom the Islanders landed your whole capacity wait on at forty ninth overall. He plays a excessive-vitality recreation, however has the arms and poise to counterpoint it. I in actuality devour his possibilities at changing correct into a third-line NHLer who does fair a little of the whole lot.

The leisure of their picks were defendable however uninspiring. The Islanders came out as losers from this draft the 2d they parted with that first-spherical select. It’s miles a prospect pool that badly wished it. Nonetheless what’s performed is carried out. We’re here to grade the gamers they did draft, and Nelson became a factual select within the 2d spherical.

    Grade: B

Still York Rangers

20 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Gabriel Perreault talks with head coach Peter Laviolette after being selected Twenty third overall by the Still York Rangers at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft - Round One at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Jeff Vinnick/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Jeff Vinnick/NHLI through Getty Photos

Gabriel Perreault, who became ranked No. 8 on the B/R Noteworthy Board, dropped your whole capacity to Twenty third overall. He has every probability to become a major-six offensive winger within the NHL. Pound-for-pound, that became if truth be told one of many finest picks of the principle spherical.

Drew Fortescue, a defenseman taken in Round 3, desires to work on his skating mechanics, however he plays a shutdown recreation and has factual instincts and the flexibility to transition the puck from the defensive zone.

I receive no longer admire what the Rangers did in Rounds 5 and 6, taking gargantuan gamers with skating complications and low upside, however they hit a home trip at the finest 2d. That outweighs all else.

    Grade: B+

Ottawa Senators

21 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Hoyt Stanley celebrates after being selected 108th overall select by the Ottawa Senators at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

The Ottawa Senators, who did no longer compose the playoffs final season, did no longer maintain a draft select till spherical four. It’s indicative of a better shy away, however that is no longer why we’re here.

Fourth-spherical select Hoyt Stanley is a mission, however that’s what the fourth spherical is for. He’s a 6’2″ defenseman who skates wisely and could perhaps perhaps circulate the puck up the ice. He played within the BCHL, a 2d-tier junior league in Canada the keep apart school-certain potentialities most often play to take care of NCAA eligibility and that type of underexposure could perhaps perhaps retroactively point out why an NHL-caliber defenseman could perhaps perhaps need fallen.

Their closing picks in rounds six and seven were investments in gargantuan gamers with low upside, however they a minimum of did a factual job in spherical four. The easier quiz Ottawa administration must query itself is how they ended up with out draft capital within the principle converse.

    Grade: C+

Philadelphia Flyers

22 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Matvei Michkov is selected by the Philadelphia Flyers with seventh overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

In reality appropriate one of many causes the Flyers ended up in this type of deep hole is that the old regime did not draft and receive factual disagreement-makers. If the 2023 class is any indicator, then that is about to alternate below GM Danny Brière.

Michkov, whom the Flyers landed at Seventh overall, became the 2d-finest participant obtainable in this draft. And he is nearer to Bedard than he is to Carlsson or Fantilli. Yeah, there were mitigating circumstances that resulted in his plunge down the board, however so what? Philadelphia became the crew that did no longer greatly stunned away they assuredly will must maintain a bonafide superstar winger in three years when he comes over to North The US.

I did no longer admire the resolution of Oliver Bonk at twenty 2d overall, as I stamp him as more of a #4/5 defenseman within the NHL, however he’s quiet a precise prospect.

And I devour about a of the Flyers’ day-two picks. Denver Barkey would be 5’8″ however he plays the gutsy, adversarial style Philadelphians will admire. Alex Ciernik, a spherical-four select is a substantial skater who likes to take care of the puck up the soar. He could perhaps perhaps become a key checking-line ahead.

Nonetheless this in actuality is all about Michkov. What serendipity for a Flyers crew that became unhurried for some.

    Grade: A+

Pittsburgh Penguins

23 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Brayden Yager is selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the 14th overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

In Kyle Dubas’ first draft as GM of the Penguins, the crew showed up and executed its assignment; no better and no worse.

Brayden Yager, who became Thirteenth on the B/R Noteworthy Board, went to Pittsburgh at 15th overall. He’s a factual two-capacity heart with a lightning-hasty originate as a shooter. He has nearly made improvements to his skating. I stamp his upside as a future 2d-line heart.

My well-liked select of theirs on day two became Emil Järventie your whole capacity within the seventh spherical. He did no longer maintain the finest draft yr, however I cherished his play for Finland in various tournaments. He lacks standout expertise, however he is an vibrant participant with decent arms. He has a risk to become a depth ahead within the NHL.

The Penguins roughly obtained slot value at the draft. Fans desires to be affirm, though no longer pleased.

    Grade: B

San Jose Sharks

24 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Quentin Passe is selected by the San Jose Sharks with the twenty sixth overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

They passed on Michkov and ancient past will desire that decision, however Will Smith is a future prime-six NHL heart who performs every single side of the sport at a proficient stage. He is mighty of a fourth-overall selection and desires to be the prolonged trip face of the Sharks.

Winger Quentin Passe, who became 12th on the B/R Noteworthy Board, dropped to San Jose at twenty sixth overall. He has some kinks to determine in his recreation and he doesn’t relate up on a consistent ample basis, however he’s gargantuan and highly talented. He can compose plays with the puck that no longer many can match.

I receive order they took winger Kasper Halttunen too early. He’s gargantuan and has a inaccurate shot, however these can finest lift a participant to this level. He desires replacement work on his skating and expertise to read the sport. He became more of a unhurried-2d-spherical value for me.

Luca Cagnoni, drafted in spherical four, became if truth be told one of many draft’s better values. Yeah, he’s a 5’9″ defenseman, however he’s a substantial skater who processes the sport at a excessive stage. Possibly he doesn’t compose the NHL, however if he does, he’s a major-four offensive contributor.

Seattle Kraken

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: (L-R) Lukas Dragicevic, 57th overall select, Carson Rehkopf, 50th overall select, and Oscar Fisker Molgaard, 52nd overall select, of the Seattle Kraken pose for a picture at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. The Kraken are a crew whose investment in analytics is demonstrable at the draft.

Eduard Šalé, whom the crew drafted at 20th overall, became 10th on the B/R Noteworthy Board. He’s a expert winger who skates wisely in originate ice and has quiet arms within the offensive zone. He desires to former physically in pronounce to take care of up within the Czech league however he has a major-six upside.

I in actuality admire their 2d-spherical efforts. Carson Rehkopf and Oscar Fisker Mølgaard maintain precise two-capacity games and could perhaps perhaps become third-liners in about a years.

Nonetheless the better of the bunch became Lukas Dragicevic. The offensive defenseman became ranked twenty eighth on B/R’s gargantuan board. He produced 75 aspects in 68 WHL games for a brutal Tri-Metropolis People crew. Yeah, he cannot protect, however neither can replacement offensive defensemen within the NHL. Getting him your whole capacity at 57th overall is an fabulous value.

St. Louis Blues

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Dalibor Dvorsky locations on a jersey onstage after being selected tenth overall by the St. Louis Blues at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft - Round One at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. Dave Sandford/NHLI through Getty Photos

The Blues utilized three first-spherical picks. I admire what they did with two of these selections.

Dalibor Dvorský would maintain earned prime-5 consideration in almost any completely different draft yr. Despite being on the youthful side of this draft class, he plays an incredibly former recreation. His arms are above-moderate and his wrist shot is a predominant risk. I order the worst-case shy away for him is a prolonged occupation as a third-line heart, his upside is far bigger than that. If he can toughen his skating then the sky is the limit. He rings a bell in my memory of dilapidated Blues heart David Backes, coincidentally ample.

Otto Stenberg is the sort of excessive-risk, excessive-reward gamble I can like at 25th overall. Stenberg is about a of the finest arms in this draft. He routinely makes plays in small spaces of the ice to compose defenders perceive silly. On occasion he has dominated worldwide play. Nonetheless his league season became moderate and he desires to maintain factual showings as a substitute of the pivots between “dominant” and “moderate.”

The resolution of Theo Lindstein at Twenty ninth is the keep apart I diverge from the Blues’ taking into consideration. He’s a factual skater and is quiet with the puck, however I stamp no excessive-pause upside. He is no longer a substantial thinker of the sport nor does he relate any offensive prowess. I order the Blues will doubtless be very lucky if he becomes even a No. 4 defenseman and I had him pegged for the third spherical.

If truth be told, the factual outweighs the inaccurate.

Tampa Bay Lightning

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Jayson Shaugabay celebrates after being selected a hundred and fifteenth overall select by the Tampa Bay Lightning at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

The Lightning obtained the 37th-overall select from Colorado Avalanche in return for ahead Ross Colton.

They aged that select on a participant who could perhaps perhaps order Colton’s feature in about a years. Ethan Gauthier is a jack-of-all-trades type of winger. He knows his recreation, which is chipping pucks up the ice, forechecking, and developing havoc down-low. He has factual arms, rankings his portion of targets, and exhibits pleasing dexterity as a playmaker. Gauthier could perhaps perhaps not “Wow” you however he also can fair quiet seamlessly match on Tampa Bay’s third line in about a years. The Circle of Lifestyles!

I additionally devour about a of their unhurried-spherical picks of Jayson Shaugabay and Ethan Hay. Hay, drafted within the Seventh spherical, scored 17 targets in 64 games for the Flint Firebirds, and what’s famous here is that he became 10th on the crew in icetime, per InStat. Had he obtained more icetime, presumably he proves himself and goes a few rounds earlier.

Good draft for the Lightning, who maintain built a few Stanley Cups through churning out replaceable ahead depth and could perhaps perhaps fair maintain performed so all over again here.

    Grade: A

Toronto Maple Leafs

28 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Easton Cowan is selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the twenty eighth overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

Easton Cowan plays the sport at fat throttle and he thinks the sport at a excessive stage as wisely. Nonetheless wow. Twenty targets and 33 assists in 68 games is tepid production for a participant drafted twenty eighth overall. And Cowan became fourth among London Knights forwards in ice time, per InStat, so it be no longer as if he lacked replacement.

He thoroughly could perhaps perhaps become a third-liner within the NHL however that looks devour completely the limit. There had been a resolution of gamers obtainable who had enormously bigger upside with out risking anything else in the course of the likelihood of developing it. He’ll must maintain long past 30 picks later.

The Leafs finest drafted twice more, in rounds 5 and 6. Granted, the Leafs’ scouting workers has traditionally performed thoroughly in Ontario. Nonetheless they’re in actuality sticking their necks out with the resolution of Cowan.

    Grade: D

Vancouver Canucks

29 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Tom Willander locations on a jersey onstage after being selected 11th overall by the Vancouver Canucks at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft - Round One at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Dave Sandford/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Dave Sandford/NHLI through Getty Photos

I became bigger on Tom Willander than a factual resolution of folks, however I had him 18th on B/R’s Noteworthy Board. Vancouver took him 11th. There had been far worse selections made in spherical one, as Willander is a substantial shutdown defenseman who can skate and address the puck. I’d bet on him as a 2d-pairing NHL defenseman, however they passed on bigger-upside forwards equivalent to Gabriel Perreault, Matthew Wood, and Brayden Yager.

Their finest value became Hunter Brzustewicz within the third spherical. The American defenseman is a heady puck-mover who sets his teammates up for targets within the offensive zone. His skating is moderate and he’s an unremarkable defender, however I order he could perhaps perhaps become a 2d-pairing defenseman.

The leisure of their picks were, for the most section awful. This draft encapsulates the whole lot about the Canucks at some level of the final resolution of years. It wasn’t the worst whatsoever and there are some issues to feel factual about, however the final product leaves you wanting more.

    Grade: C

Vegas Golden Knights

30 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: David Edstrom is selected by the Vegas Golden Knights with the thirty 2d overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

The Stanley Cup winners were obviously no longer swimming in draft property, however the scouting crew did job with what they’d obtainable to them.

Vegas became, amusing ample, if truth be told one of many few contenders from final season to quiet take care of its first-spherical select. The Golden Knights selected heart David Edstrom at thirty 2d overall, and he is an acceptable participant for that slotting. He’s a gargantuan, physical heart with factual arms and hockey sense to counterpoint them. His recreation seamlessly interprets to the NHL style, and it be easy to imagine him as a future third-line checking heart within the mildew of Adam Lowry.

Mathieu Cataford is additionally a excellent value at 77th overall. He’s a wisely-rounded winger with a checking-line upside.

Arttu Karki, drafted in Round 4, became a level-per-recreation defenseman in Finland’s U20 league. He’s factual at dishing the puck, however his defensive recreation is subpar, and he also can fair no longer maintain ample offense to offset that. He’s a factual gamble at this stage of the draft, though.

Vegas did nothing thrilling with its picks, however it obtained acceptable value at every slot.

    Grade: B

Washington Capitals

31 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 29: Andrew Cristall poses for a portrait after being selected 40th overall by the Washington Capitals at some level of the 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 29, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos)

    Brian Babineau/NHLI through Getty Photos

I’m decrease on Ryan Leonard than others. I had him 14th on B/R’s Noteworthy Board and the Capitals drafted him eighth overall. Nonetheless I receive it. He is gargantuan, snappy, plays tantalizing, and has factual arms to counterpoint all of it. I receive no longer order he is superlative in any capacity and that’s explanation why I stamp him as more of a future 2d and third-line tweener, however I’d no longer be mindblown if he becomes more. Among the picks I disagree with, this is the one the keep apart I can stamp the competing argument.

Andrew Cristall at 40th overall is largely one of many draft’s finest values. He became 15th on B/R’s Noteworthy Board. His arms and imaginative and prescient are about a of the finest within the draft and there’s a reason he registered 95 aspects in 54 WHL games no topic having little abet spherical him. Absolute self assurance, he is a risk. He’s 5’11”, doesn’t skate wisely, and plays something of a perimeter recreation. Nonetheless the Capitals drafted any individual with All-Superstar capability within the center of the 2d spherical.

Those are two in actuality, in actuality factual potentialities to lumber away the draft with. The retool in Washington is on its capacity.

    Grade: B

Winnipeg Jets

32 of 32

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JUNE 28: Colby Barlow is selected by the Winnipeg Jets with the 18th overall select at some level of spherical if truth be told one of many 2023 Better Deck NHL Draft at Bridgestone Enviornment on June 28, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Tell by Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos)

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Photos

Cobly Barlow became no longer the finest participant obtainable at the time, however he did unsuitable 17th on B/R’s Noteworthy Board. The Jets drafting him at 18 is an acceptable value. He’s physically former, skates wisely north-south and has an completely inaccurate shot originate. He’ll be a major-nine winger in Winnipeg quickly ample, and I err nearer to the give up-six than the third line.

The third spherical became maybe too quickly for a mission devour excessive school winger Zach Nehring, though admittedly more analysis on him is wished.

Goaltenders are traditionally factual value within the unhurried rounds of the draft and 6’0″ Tomas Milic has proven himself within the WHL and internationally.

Winger Connor Levis, drafted with if truth be told one of many final picks of the draft, became a level-per-recreation 18-yr-broken-down within the WHL final season. Not a inaccurate bet.

I order the Jets left some value on the desk however they did not receive anything else egregious. Barlow is a factual prospect they assuredly maintain some upside within the later rounds.

Mercedes Dominate Sprint Qualifying as Russell Takes Pole in Shanghai

Published

on

bfbc50b6d8e7e3b1baf9ad165b5d647e557ef593

Mercedes delivered an impressive performance at the Shanghai International Circuit as championship leader George Russell secured pole position for the season’s first sprint race during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend. The British driver topped every stage of the sprint qualifying session, marking the first sprint pole of his Formula One career and reinforcing Mercedes’ strong start to the season.

Russell clocked a fastest lap of 1 minute 31.520 seconds, demonstrating both confidence and control around the Shanghai circuit. His performance placed him comfortably ahead of his rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli, who finished just 0.289 seconds behind. The result secured a front-row lockout for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, highlighting the team’s competitive edge early in the championship.

The strong showing follows Russell’s victory at the season-opening race in Australia, further strengthening his position as the current championship leader in the Formula One standings. Speaking after the session, Russell praised the performance of the car, describing it as “a real joy to drive.” He emphasized that the team had already sensed the car’s potential following their success in Melbourne.

“Everything about the car feels strong right now,” Russell said after qualifying. “The engine is performing really well, and the balance around the circuit felt fantastic. It’s very different from Melbourne, but the pace today was incredibly satisfying.”

Behind the dominant Mercedes duo, Lando Norris of McLaren secured third place on the grid. Norris expressed satisfaction with his result, particularly after finishing ahead of both Ferrari drivers during the session. Although he faced a moment of disruption when Antonelli briefly impeded him during an earlier phase of qualifying, Norris later clarified that he was not on a competitive lap at the time.

The stewards reviewed the incident but ultimately decided to take no further action after considering Norris’s explanation.

Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished fourth and sixth, respectively, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri separating them in fifth place. Ferrari had previously experimented with a new aerodynamic concept known informally as the “Macarena” rear wing but removed it ahead of the qualifying session due to reliability concerns.

Leclerc acknowledged that Mercedes appeared to hold a clear advantage during qualifying conditions. However, he suggested Ferrari could close the gap during the sprint race itself.

“Mercedes seem to gain more lap time during qualifying,” Leclerc explained. “We’re not quite there yet in terms of outright pace over one lap, but during the race we’re usually much closer. I’m hopeful we can challenge tomorrow.”

Elsewhere on the grid, Max Verstappen finished eighth, while Haas driver Oliver Bearman secured ninth place. Pierre Gasly also attracted attention after being placed under investigation for allegedly impeding Verstappen during the session.

The sprint race will cover 100 kilometers and award points to the top eight finishers, with eight points available to the winner. The result will also set the tone for Sunday’s main Grand Prix, where teams will aim to translate qualifying speed into race-day success.

With Mercedes demonstrating strong pace and Russell carrying momentum from his early-season victory, the upcoming sprint race promises to deliver an exciting battle as teams fight for crucial points and early championship advantage.

India Survive Bethell’s Heroics to Edge England by 7 Runs in T20 World Cup Semi-Final Thriller

Published

on

AP26064627577259

In a nail-biting semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, India edged out England by a mere seven runs in a high-octane clash at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. The match lived up to its billing as one of the most exciting encounters of the tournament, featuring massive totals, explosive hitting, and tense moments right until the final ball.

India, batting first, unleashed a ferocious assault to post a commanding 253 for 7 in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson starred with a dazzling 89 off just 42 balls, blending graceful strokeplay with brute power to dominate the England attack. His innings was boosted by a key dropped catch by Harry Brook, which proved expensive as Samson made the most of the reprieve.

The momentum carried into the middle order, where Shivam Dube blasted a rapid 43 from 25 deliveries, dismantling the spinners with aggressive intent. Contributions from Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya in the death overs pushed the score past 250, setting England a challenging chase of 254.

England’s pursuit got off to a shaky start with early wickets, but 22-year-old Jacob Bethell produced a breathtaking counterattack. His maiden T20I century—105 off 48 balls—kept the visitors alive with a flurry of audacious shots, including powerful drives and innovative scoops. Bethell’s heroics brought the equation down to 45 needed from the last three overs, igniting hopes of a historic chase.

However, India’s bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah’s economical and pressure-packed spells, regained control in the crucial final stages. Bumrah’s tight over stemmed the flow of runs at a pivotal juncture. Axar Patel’s two outstanding catches, including a brilliant relay effort, further tilted the balance.

Despite a late flourish from Jofra Archer, who smashed a few sixes, England finished on 246 for 7. Bethell’s dismissal via a run-out while trying to keep the strike proved decisive, sealing India’s narrow victory.

This thrilling win propels India into the final against New Zealand, setting up a mouthwatering showdown. The semifinal will go down as a memorable spectacle of modern T20 cricket—packed with 34 sixes, daring batting, and dramatic twists that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Hyrox: How the Ultimate Hybrid Fitness Race Turned Global Addiction

Published

on

fitness1758086020

In today’s fitness world, where monotonous gym routines quickly lose their spark and motivation often disappears as fast as a typical New Year’s resolution, one competition has broken through the clutter: Hyrox. This international event fuses endurance running with grueling functional workouts, evolving from a niche gathering into a worldwide obsession that now draws hundreds of thousands of participants across the globe.

The concept is brilliantly simple yet brutally effective: eight 1-kilometer runs, each followed by one of eight demanding workout stations. Athletes tackle sled pushes, rowing, burpee broad jumps, sandbag lunges, wall balls, farmer’s carries, and more. On paper it sounds punishing—and it usually feels that way, but the surprisingly high finish rates prove the format strikes the perfect balance: tough enough to test limits, accessible enough for determined participants to conquer.

Its global standardization is a game-changer. The exact same course and stations appear in every city London, New York, Singapore, Dubai, you name it. This consistency allows competitors to directly compare times, splits, rankings, and personal bests across continents, seasons, and years. In our data-obsessed fitness culture, those tangible metrics become powerful fuel for ongoing improvement.

Hyrox has also perfectly captured the rise of the hybrid athlete. It shatters old divisions—runner vs. lifter, endurance vs. strength demanding excellence in both cardiovascular capacity and muscular power. By steering clear of highly technical skills like complex gymnastics or elite Olympic lifts, it keeps the entry barrier reasonable while still offering serious competitive depth. Elite pros and complete beginners share the same start line (in separate divisions), facing identical challenges.

The experience goes far beyond the workout. Hyrox events are full-on spectacles: massive indoor arenas filled with booming music, vivid branding, roaring crowds, and spectators close enough to feel the energy. It’s often described as a fitness festival rather than just a race. Finish-line photos flood social media, volunteers keep spirits high, and a powerful sense of community emerges from shared exhaustion and triumph.

The lifestyle aspect is growing too. Athletes now plan “fitness travel” around the race calendar, turning weekends in Europe or city trips in the U.S. into purposeful adventures. Because the format never changes, training and expectations travel seamlessly—no surprises, just the same test anywhere.

Inclusivity is another cornerstone. From top-tier professionals to competitors in their 60s, 70s, and beyond, plus dedicated adaptive divisions, Hyrox truly lives its promise: this is for every body capable of training for it. That shared struggle and collective celebration forge unusually strong loyalty.

The brand’s growth shows no signs of slowing. Participation numbers keep climbing, prize money is increasing, and serious discussions about potential Olympic inclusion are already circulating in fitness circles. Regardless of whether that dream comes true, Hyrox has already redefined what large-scale, inclusive fitness competition can be.

In an era craving trackable progress, genuine community, and experiences worth sharing, Hyrox delivers on all fronts. It’s undeniably brutal. But for the thousands already registering for their next event while their muscles are still recovering—it’s unmistakably addictive.

USA Shocks Canada in OT Thriller to End 46-Year Olympic Hockey Gold Drought

Published

on

usa-hockey-highlights-699b60251de63305557

The United States dramatically ended a 46-year drought by claiming men’s Olympic ice hockey gold at the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina.

In an intense gold-medal showdown at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, Team USA edged out archrivals Canada 2-1 in overtime, clinching the final gold of the Games in thrilling fashion.

Jack Hughes emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal just 101 seconds into 3-on-3 overtime, roughly 1:41 in off a feed from Zach Werenski. The puck slipped through Jordan Binnington’s five-hole, igniting euphoric celebrations on the American bench. Hughes, who had lost a tooth earlier in the game, delivered a moment that will forever stand alongside the iconic “Miracle on Ice” from 1980.

This victory marked the first time the U.S. men had won Olympic hockey gold on foreign soil, adding extra significance to the triumph abroad.

Canada, the pre-game favorites, controlled much of the play and outshot the Americans 42-26 overall (with Hellebuyck making 41 saves). They pressed relentlessly but were thwarted by missed chances, including a golden opportunity from Nathan MacKinnon and a stellar close-range denial of Mitch Marner by Connor Hellebuyck, whose goaltending brilliance proved crucial.

The U.S. opened the scoring early through Matt Boldy’s dazzling individual effort, weaving through defenders to beat Binnington. Canada leveled late in the second period via Cale Makar’s sharp finish amid sustained pressure, but neither side could find a winner in the third despite Canada’s territorial edge.

The rivalry was amplified by an electric, predominantly pro-Canadian crowd that booed the Americans pre-game. With NHL stars back in Olympic action for the first time since 2014, the quality was elite throughout.

Canada suffered a major blow when Captain Sidney Crosby was sidelined by a knee injury, his leadership sorely missed in critical moments.

In a poignant touch, the victorious U.S. players honored the late Johnny Gaudreau, tragically killed in 2024, by carrying his jersey during celebrations, infusing the triumph with deep emotion.

This gold helped the United States secure 12 golds overall, placing second in the medal table. For Canada, the loss capped a tournament of high expectations turned to heartbreak.

On a night filled with tension, grit, and historic resonance, American men’s ice hockey reclaimed its place at the top of the Olympic podium.

The Godfather of Padel in the USA Reveals the Hidden Formula Behind the World’s Fastest-Growing Sport

Published

on

The-Godfather-of-Padel-Shares-Secrets-of-Sport's-Growth

Padel isn’t merely surging in popularity; it’s rewriting the global playbook for sport, community, and capital. What began as a niche pastime has evolved into a cultural and economic force, stretching from Dubai’s desert courts to Europe’s bustling clubs and, now, America’s rapidly accelerating Padel boom. With more than  35 million players worldwide, the sport has entered a new era of mainstream momentum. At the heart of this transformation stands Marcos del Pilar, the visionary many now refer to as the Godfather of Padel in the USA.

A serial entrepreneur, investor, and one of the most respected global Padel consultants, Marcos has spent more than 30 years building, teaching, and scaling the sport. Today, he is the expert investors call before breaking ground on a Padel facility, the advisor federations depend on to set standards, and one of the strategists whose work helped push Padel into the American mainstream.

His best-selling book THE SECRET CODE OF PADEL reveals the first complete blueprint behind the sport’s meteoric rise, unpacking the mindset, systems, and business frameworks that have turned Padel into an international cultural and economic force. For the first time, he is revealing the formula that shaped the modern Padel era.

Cracking the Code: Why Padel Became a Global Force

According to Marcos, Padel’s strength comes from a rare combination of accessibility, community engagement, and scalable growth. As he explains, “Padel is more than a sport. It is a platform for human connection, growth, and opportunity.”

Unlike traditional racquet sports, Padel is easy to learn, highly social, and thrives in compact facilities with strong revenue potential. This has attracted entrepreneurs, private clubs, celebrities, athletes, and institutional investors. But its rapid rise in the United States needed more than enthusiasm. It required leadership, structure, and someone who understood the sport from every angle.

One of those was Marcos del Pilar.

The Architect Behind America’s Padel Revolution

When Marcos arrived in the USA in 2017, Padel was almost virtually unknown. Courts were limited, investors were hesitant, and the ecosystem lacked standards, trained coaches, and infrastructure. The resistance was significant, but Marcos saw a future others could not yet imagine.

His leadership portfolio reflects one of the most comprehensive resumes in modern sports development:

  • Former President of the United States Padel Association (USPA)
  • Head of Padel  with the RSPA  (Racquet Sports Professionals Association), certifying thousands of professionals
  • Padel Consultant for Tennis Australia and the United States Tennis Association (USTA), and several international investment groups.
  • Recipient of multiple industry awards, including RSPA Master Professional, President’s Award, and Professional of the Year
  • Serial entrepreneur and investor in the Padel ecosystem, and partner of some of the biggest Padel ventures in the USA.
  • Co-Founder, and former CEO and Commissioner of the Pro Padel League
  • Team USA Head Coach at the 2021 Qatar and 2022 Dubai Padel World Championships.
  • Ranked Top Number 3 among the Top 50 Most Influential Persons in the New Padel World by international media outlets.

Marcos also played a critical role in bringing the first-ever Padel World Championship to the United States in Las Vegas in 2022, uniting more than 600 players from 32 countries. Beyond executive leadership, he has shaped the sport’s educational and professional frameworks by authoring and leading the RSPA’s worldwide certification program, as well as numerous resources for coaches, investors, and clubs.

His book, THE SECRET CODE OF PADEL, reveals the proven principles, strategic insights, and mindset shifts that shaped the sport’s global rise while offering powerful lessons for business, leadership, and personal transformation.

The Hidden Formula: Vision, Mindset, Ecosystem Building

Marcos believes that Padel’s expansion is driven by a mindset he refers to as the secret code. The code includes:

  • Believing in a vision before anyone else can see it
  • Making bold and strategic long-term decisions
  • Building sustainable Padel ecosystems rather than simply building courts
  • Creating opportunities for communities, investors, and future leaders
  • Using sport as a vehicle for growth, impact, and transformation

As he shares, “Success begins with one decision. You must believe in your vision even before the world understands it.”

From Consultant to Global Catalyst

MARCOS DEL PILAR, Global Padel Consultant and Professional Padel Coaching, has now become the premier strategic advisory platform for the sport’s global expansion. His hybrid model includes:

  • Facility development and ROI consulting
  • Strategic business planning for clubs and federations
  • Coaching certification and professional education
  • Leadership development and workshops
  • Brand partnerships, marketing strategy, and keynote speaking
  • Advisory roles with major investors and global organizations

He is widely regarded as the go-to expert for anyone entering the global Padel industry.

A Vision for the Future of Padel

Marcos aims to make Padel one of the world’s largest sports, especially in the American market. His vision includes thousands of high-quality facilities across the country, unified education and coaching standards, stronger international collaboration, and a thriving ecosystem where investors, communities, and athletes grow together.

As he says, “If you want to change an industry, you begin by changing yourself and people’s mindsets.” And through Padel, he is doing exactly that.

As the sport accelerates toward becoming a multi-billion-dollar global industry, one thing is clear. The future of Padel, particularly in America, will continue to be shaped by the vision and leadership of Marcos del Pilar.

The Godfather of Padel has revealed the code. Now, the world is ready to play.

ICC Rejects Bangladesh’s Request to Shift T20 World Cup Matches Amid Security Row

Published

on

photo

A tense standoff has developed between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) over Bangladesh’s participation in the men’s T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.

Reports indicate that the ICC has turned down the BCB’s plea to relocate Bangladesh’s group-stage matches from India, following concerns raised by the BCB about player safety amid strained bilateral relations. During a recent virtual discussion, the ICC reportedly emphasised that Bangladesh must fulfil its scheduled fixtures in India or face potential forfeiture of points.

The BCB, however, has pushed back, insisting no direct threats of forfeiture were made in talks and maintaining their stance on security issues. No official statements have been released by the ICC or the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), leaving the matter unresolved with the tournament approaching.

Bangladesh, in Group C, are due to play three initial matches in Kolkata—against West Indies (February 7), Italy (February 9), and England (February 14)—with their final group fixture against Nepal in Mumbai. Ongoing preparations underscore the urgency for resolution.

The controversy stems from a related IPL incident, where the BCCI directed Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from his INR 9.2 crore contract for the 2026 season, citing unspecified “recent developments.” Mustafizur was the only Bangladeshi player picked in the auction, and his release—without a formal Governing Council meeting—heightened the BCB’s apprehensions about player treatment and security.

With less than a month until the event, the lack of consensus is drawing attention to ICC governance, tournament planning, and board diplomacy. Potential outcomes could influence future venue dispute resolutions in ICC tournaments.

As of now, Bangladesh’s fixtures in India stand unchanged, but further discussions in the near term will be pivotal to avoid escalation or disruption.

With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 set to begin in early February, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has declared that its national team will not travel to India under the current circumstances. The board has officially asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to move all of Bangladesh’s group-stage fixtures to venues outside India, primarily citing safety and security concerns for players and officials amid strained bilateral relations.

The decision follows an emergency BCB board meeting and comes on the heels of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from his IPL 2026 contract. Although not explicitly linked by either board, the timing has fueled speculation in cricket circles, with some Bangladeshi officials viewing it as indicative of broader tensions.

Bangladesh, placed in Group C alongside England, West Indies, Italy, and Nepal, was originally scheduled to play three matches at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and one at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Shifting these games would involve complex rearrangements, including venue availability in Sri Lanka (where Pakistan’s matches are already allocated due to similar geopolitical issues), security protocols, and broadcasting logistics—all with limited time before the tournament opener on February 7.

The ICC has yet to respond publicly, but sources suggest contingency plans are being discussed. Precedents like hybrid models in recent events (e.g., India’s Champions Trophy games shifted due to Pakistan relations) could influence the outcome, though relocating one team’s fixtures mid-preparation is rare.

For the Bangladeshi squad, training continues amid uncertainty, with emphasis on player welfare. Indian venues remain prepared as primary hosts, but any schedule changes could impact travel and rest for multiple teams.

This episode underscores how geopolitical frictions can disrupt major international tournaments, challenging the ICC to uphold fairness, practicality, and the event’s overall integrity. A swift resolution is anticipated in the coming days to maintain momentum for the global spectacle.

Ben Stokes Backs Brendon McCullum to Continue as England Head Coach

England captain Ben Stokes has expressed strong support for head coach Brendon McCullum to stay in his role, despite the team’s loss of the Ashes series in Australia.

Stokes and McCullum took charge together in 2022. This tour was seen as a key test of their leadership, but England lost the first three Tests, conceding the series early. They bounced back with a victory in the fourth Test at Melbourne, their first win on Australian soil in nearly 15 years, with the fifth and final Test set to begin in Sydney on Sunday (23:30 GMT Saturday).

Both Stokes and McCullum have contracts running until 2027 and have indicated their desire to continue beyond this tour.

While Stokes is widely regarded as England’s ideal captain and likely to lead into the home summer, questions may arise over McCullum’s position and that of cricket director Rob Key.

“I have no doubt that Brendon and I are the right duo to lead this team forward in the coming years,” Stokes said.

When asked if he and the New Zealand-born McCullum form an inseparable partnership, Stokes added: “I struggle to picture anyone else stepping in to guide this side from its current position to greater successes.”

This series defeat continues England’s poor record in away Ashes contests, with their last triumph in Australia dating back to 2010-11, the only success there since 1986.

Past heavy losses in Australia have often triggered major overhauls in England’s setup; Stokes and McCullum were appointed after a 4-0 thrashing four years earlier.

“We haven’t won an Ashes series here since 2010-11, and reactions to those failures have led to changes that haven’t ultimately solved the problem,” Stokes noted. “There are decision-makers above me. Previous tours haven’t gone well, but repeating the drastic resets of the past would likely land us in the same spot again.”

McCullum is scheduled to coach England at next month’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, so any review of his role is expected to wait until after that event.

Stokes added that he would expect to be involved in discussions about potential leadership changes.

“No one knows if changes are coming, but we’re both committed to continuing our work,” he said.

Under Stokes and McCullum, England started strongly, winning 10 of their first 11 Tests, though results have levelled off since. In their last 34 Tests, they have 16 wins, 16 losses, and two draws, without securing a major five-Test series win against Australia or India.

McCullum took on oversight of England’s white-ball sides at the start of 2025. Since then, the Test team has won just four of 10 matches, including a routine series victory over Zimbabwe in May.

Director Rob Key has suggested the pre-tour white-ball commitments in New Zealand hampered Ashes preparation, though he stood by the scheduling.

Stokes, however, dismissed concerns that McCullum’s expanded responsibilities have impacted the Test side.

“He’s handling both roles now, but it hasn’t affected our dynamic with the Test group at all,” Stokes said.

England have announced a 12-man squad for the Sydney Test, including spinner Shoaib Bashir and paceman Matthew Potts.

The team will make at least one change after fast bowler **Gus Atkinson** was ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained in Melbourne.

Bashir hasn’t played since July due to a finger injury suffered against India, while Potts last featured over a year ago against New Zealand in December 2024.

“He’s been around the squad,” Stokes said of Potts. “He made a strong early impression in Tests, but his role has evolved. With Gus sidelined, this creates an opening for someone new.”

Australia may make up to two adjustments, potentially bringing in specialist spinner Todd Murphy for seamer Jhye Richardson, and possibly swapping all-rounder Beau Webster for Cameron Green.

2025 Qatar Grand Prix: The Strategic Masterstroke That Reignited the Championship Fight

2025-Qatar-Grand-Prix-A-Strategic-Masterstroke-F1

The 2025 Qatar Grand Prix delivered everything a Formula 1 season finale contender should: drama, razor-sharp strategy, high-stakes pressure, and a championship battle left wide open with just one race to go. Max Verstappen’s commanding victory at Lusail not only showcased his trademark racecraft but also revived his bid for the Drivers’ Championship, narrowing the gap to just 12 points behind leader Lando Norris. With Oscar Piastri only four points further back, the season now heads to Abu Dhabi with three drivers still mathematically in contention.

Verstappen’s Calculated Brilliance

Starting third behind a McLaren front-row lockout, Verstappen wasted no time asserting himself. He swept past Lando Norris at Turn 1, instantly slotting into second behind polesitter Oscar Piastri. But the defining moment came moments later when Nico Hulkenberg’s stranded Haas triggered an early Safety Car.

Red Bull executed what Verstappen would later call a “smart” and decisive strategy: they pitted immediately. McLaren, in contrast, kept both Piastri and Norris out, an error CEO Zak Brown would publicly concede as “the wrong decision.”

From there, Verstappen was clinical. Adhering to the FIA’s mandatory 25-lap tire limit, he managed two perfectly timed stops, maintained race-leading pace, and reclaimed track position with surgical precision. When Norris finally pitted and rejoined on fresh rubber, Verstappen breezed past him again, this time for the lead that would secure his “incredible” win.

The triumph was more than a race victory. It was a statement of intent: Verstappen is not done fighting.

McLaren’s Miscalculation Costs Crucial Points

For McLaren, the weekend was a near-perfect opportunity turned into a missed milestone. Their pace was undeniable, with Piastri on pole and Norris alongside him, both boasting strong Sprint results (Piastri first, Norris third). But in Formula 1, timing is everything.

By choosing not to pit under the Safety Car, McLaren forced their drivers into a compromised strategy, losing invaluable track position as the race unfolded. Piastri’s raw pace salvaged second place, but he finished 15 seconds behind Verstappen. Norris, meanwhile, struggled in the mid-stint traffic, eventually finishing fourth after a late gain due to a rival’s mistake.

The cost? Norris missed the chance to clinch the championship one race early. Instead, he heads to Abu Dhabi just 12 points clear of Verstappen and 16 points ahead of his own teammate. The internal dynamics at McLaren will be fascinating to watch; team harmony under the pressure of a three-way title fight is never guaranteed.

Williams Shines with a Surprise Podium

While the spotlight fell on the championship contenders, Williams quietly authored one of the weekend’s most compelling stories. Carlos Sainz delivered a superb drive from seventh to third, capitalizing on McLaren’s vulnerability and overtaking Norris to secure Williams’ second podium of the season.

This result marked a significant turnaround from their performance at the same venue the previous year. “To get a podium here, of all places, was a surprise,” Sainz admitted. For a team fighting to re-establish itself as a consistent midfield force, this was a breakthrough.

Ferrari’s Troubles Deepen

If Williams over-delivered, Ferrari did the opposite. The team struggled from the opening practice sessions, unable to dial in the car on a circuit that exposed their aerodynamic weaknesses. Sprint qualifying was especially painful. Lewis Hamilton failed to escape Q1 for the second consecutive weekend, while Charles Leclerc lost positions in the Sprint after starting ninth.

The Grand Prix brought little relief. Leclerc salvaged eighth thanks to incidents up ahead, but he never looked competitive. Hamilton, still searching for his first podium of the season, finished outside the points. Two poor weekends in a row leave Ferrari with more questions than answers heading into the finale.

Star Power Lights Up Lusail

True to Qatar’s reputation for spectacle, the paddock brimmed with global celebrities. Novak Djokovic presented the Sprint trophies. Football icons David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, and Gary Neville walked the grid. Serena Williams soaked in the pre-race energy. Heavy metal legends Metallica roamed the pit lane. And Kevin Hart waved the chequered flag to end the event, an appropriately dramatic finish to a dramatic race.

A Championship on a Knife’s Edge

The 2025 Qatar Grand Prix underscored the essence of championship-level Formula 1: strategy defines outcomes, pressure exposes teams, and one race can reshape everything. Verstappen’s win rekindles the title fight. McLaren’s strategic error tightens the race to the wire. Piastri remains the dark horse with nothing to lose.

As the paddock heads to Abu Dhabi for the showdown, one thing is clear: the 2025 title will not be won by raw speed alone, but by nerves, nuance, and flawless execution. The battle is far from over, and the finale promises to be unforgettable.

Women’s Soccer: A Vibrant Haven for LGBTQ+ Joy and Resilience

Published

In a world where sports often mirror societal divides, women’s soccer emerges as a radiant sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community. From rainbow-draped stadiums to queer-led festivals, the sport weaves threads of belonging, defiance, and unapologetic celebration. As global viewership surges, it stands not just as a game, but as a lifeline for those seeking visibility and solidarity.

From Stadiums to Festivals: Building Queer Spaces in the Beautiful Game

Picture this: a sun-drenched field in northern England, where players in Marge Simpson wigs and Sporty Spice outfits chase a ball under Pride flags fluttering like confetti. This is Ball Together Now (BTN), a 2022-founded festival that draws non-professional LGBTQ+ teams from across the UK for daytime matches and euphoric nighttime raves. Organizer Lois Kay beams, “I’ve never seen so many lesbians all in one tent!” BTN’s ethos is unyielding inclusion, explicitly welcoming trans and non-binary athletes in a sport still grappling with barriers elsewhere.

This electric energy spills into professional arenas. At Arsenal Women’s matches, fan Emily Calder, a lifelong devotee, finds a queer utopia. “Arsenal women’s games are the only place you’d find as many lesbians and queer women as you would at Pride!” she exclaims. Calder’s story is emblematic: alienated by the men’s game’s toxic undercurrents, she rediscovered soccer at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, drawn by its open-hearted crowds. Queer couples link arms in the stands, rainbow scarves swaying like a collective heartbeat. Events like Baller FC’s “Slaying the Field”—a 2025 UEFA Women’s Euros bash blending short films, arm-wrestling, and line dancing—further blur lines between pitch and party, filling voids left by shuttered LGBTQ+ nightlife spots. In London alone, over half of queer venues have vanished in two decades, making these soccer-fueled gatherings indispensable hubs for connection.

Out Stars Shining Bright: Visibility That Draws and Inspires

At the heart of this allure? A constellation of openly queer players who shatter silence. The 2025 Women’s Euros boasted at least 78 out athletes among 368, a staggering 21%, dwarfing global LGBTQ+ identification rates of just 9%, per a 2023 Ipsos survey. Power couples like USWNT icons Christen Press and Tobin Heath, or Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead, embody this boldness. Mead and Miedema even quipped about their on-pitch “rivalry” turning romantic, turning potential tension into tender lore.

Contrast this with men’s soccer’s shadows. No openly gay players grace the English Premier League or Ligue 1’s top tiers. Adelaide United’s Josh Cavallo, the sole out male pro in a major league, decries it as a “very toxic place,” haunted by death threats and slurs. Homophobic flares erupt routinely: Ligue 1 clubs fined for hiding anti-bigotry badges, a 2023 USMNT-Mexico clash halted by chants. Women’s soccer, however, flips the script. Calder notes, “There’s a shocking difference in the culture… so many out gay women players.” This visibility magnetizes newcomers; her queer friends, once soccer-averse, now flock to games as de facto Pride parades.

Across the Atlantic, the USWNT amplifies this. Amid Trump-era rollbacks on LGBTQ+ rights—from health funding cuts to bathroom bans—Megan Rapinoe led a defiant charge. Skipping a 2019 White House invite post-World Cup triumph, she declared queerness “intrinsic to the success” of her squad: “You can’t win a championship without gays on your team.” Allies like Ali Krieger echoed her, forging a legacy of vocal advocacy that fans like Ed Fox hail for sidestepping “machismo and toxic masculinity.”

Defiant Roots and a Boundless Horizon

Women’s soccer’s queer magnetism isn’t accidental, it’s forged in rebellion. Banned in England for 50 years on league grounds, outlawed in 1920s Canada, and stifled under Franco’s Spain until the 1970s, the sport has always thrived on society’s edges. This marginal history resonates with those challenging heteronormativity, birthing a culture of radical joy.

Today, as attendance skyrockets, Euros finals drawing millions, it battles fresh foes: pay inequities, online harassment, and inclusion growing pains. Yet, figures like Birmingham’s Flaming Foxes captain Laura Graham insist, “Women’s soccer feels like it has something for everyone.” BTN remains her “favorite weekend,” spawning enduring queer bonds beyond the bar scene.

As the game evolves, its LGBTQ+ embrace promises broader ripples. It counters isolation with community, bigotry with brilliance. In stadium roars and festival beats, women’s soccer isn’t just played, it’s lived, a testament to resilience that invites all to join the dance. For queer hearts worldwide, it’s more than a haven: it’s home.
