Streaming Giant Spotify Closes the Curtain on Live Audio App

Spotify has announced that it is going to sunset its audio app Spotify Live, which was introduced in 2021 under the name Greenroom  According to Spotify, the audio app is no longer useful as a standalone app. The app was launched in response to the social audio app Clubhouse’s increasing popularity. Gayle Gaviola Moreau, a Spotify representative, confirmed the company’s decision to “sunset[ing] the Spotify Live app” in a statement.

 

Although the firm has not disclosed information if Spotify Live features would still be included in the main audio app. It has hinted that it will keep providing live audio in a limited way, such as through listening parties that enable fans to digitally connect with artists.

 

To increase its exposure, Spotify relaunched Greenroom as Spotify Live and integrated it into the main Spotify app. Nevertheless, the business canceled several of its original shows and shut down the creator fund that had been established for Spotify Live after hearing rumors that the app was having trouble gaining popularity.

While Spotify has promised to “invest in, create, and experiment with new formats for creators and listeners across the world,” it hasn’t offered any other information on its strategies. The business has experienced encouraging results with its artist-focused use case of listening parties and will continue to investigate this feature in the future.

 

In the past year, other businesses including Meta, Reddit, and Amazon have likewise reduced the number of their audio services. Reddit retired its audio-only feature, Reddit Talk, while Meta discontinued its podcast service and short-form audio feature, Soundbites. Also, Amazon reduced the number of employees working for its live radio app, Amp.
