Netflix has announced it will not be releasing the highly anticipated documentary about Prince following a new deal made with the late musician’s estate. The collaboration between the estate and Netflix will lead to the development of a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive, ultimately replacing the previously planned release.
Ezra Edelman, known for his acclaimed work on O.J.: Made in America, had spent years working on a nine-hour documentary that was said to include explosive interviews with Prince’s former business partners, lovers, friends, and associates. Reports had suggested that the film would present allegations of physical and emotional abuse, including claims from his ex-partner Jill Jones, who described instances of violence, as well as testimonies from others who recalled Prince’s controlling behavior and his traumatic past.
While the documentary had promised to delve deeply into the complexities of Prince’s life, the new agreement between the Prince estate and Netflix ensures that any narrative presented will be more aligned with the artist’s legacy and wishes. The estate’s goal is to honor Prince’s creativity and genius, ensuring his story is told in a manner that is factually accurate and respectful.

This decision comes after months of controversy surrounding the project, with stakeholders emphasizing the importance of sharing Prince’s story in a way that reflects his profound impact on music and culture. The Prince estate has also hinted at more content coming from his extensive archive, signaling exciting developments for fans and the public to look forward to.
