Maya Penn Pays Homage to Karl Lagerfeld with the Sustainable Dress at Met Gala

Maya Penn made a fashion statement on May 1 at the Met Gala with her customized eco-friendly gown designed by Coach. As a representative of Coachtopia, the company’s newest sub-brand that strives to improve the circular fashion system, the young supporter of sustainable fashion attended the event.

 

Maya Penn’s Met Gala outfit honored the legendary Karl Lagerfeld while adhering to her environmental values. Mother Nature served as the inspiration for the artist and designer’s one-of-a-kind style, which she created when she was just eight years old and launched her eco-friendly fashion firm, Maya’s Ideas. She highlighted her delight to stand in for sustainable design on the Met Gala carpet, adding, “I’ve been an environmental and climate activist for pretty much as long as I can remember.”

Penn was instrumental in Coachtopia's founding and its upcycling of old materials to cut waste design ethos. She praised Coach for emphasizing product longevity since she thinks it's important for the fashion business. Her unique Coach dress was fashioned from recycled components, including soda cans, old lace remnants, and even the packaging from hot dog stands outside the Met.

The handcrafted dress also included Dandelion flower-dyed silk chiffon leftovers from Coach's Fall 2023 catwalk show. Her dress had a large flower appliqué on the shoulder made of scraps of old lace and discarded plastic packaging. "I'm creative. I work in design. The animator I am. I paint," Penn said. "I use all the different aesthetic elements that I find appealing in the various art forms that I use in my work in my fashion."

At the Met Gala, Maya Penn showcased her multifaceted personality by bringing her knowledge of sustainable fashion, artistic talent, and environmental advocacy.
