Chappell Roan’s remarkable summer just reached new heights. The 26-year-old pop sensation drew an unprecedented crowd at Lollapalooza over the weekend, with organizers confirming it as the largest daytime performance in the festival’s history.
“Chappell’s set was the biggest daytime performance we’ve ever experienced. It was a truly magical moment that will be a permanent part of Lolla’s legacy,” a Lollapalooza spokesperson told CNN.
The Gen Z pop star, who has seen a meteoric rise this summer with her 2024 single “Good Luck Babe!” and the viral 2023 hit “Feminomenon,” headlined on the first day of the Chicago festival.
A post on X from Lollapalooza’s official account celebrated the moment, showing a sprawling crowd in Grant Park with the caption, “It’s Chappell’s world and we’re just living in it.”
Although the precise number of attendees at Roan’s set is not yet confirmed, Lollapalooza reported a daily attendance of 110,000 this year. Sources indicate that Roan’s performance rivaled many headliners, potentially marking it as the biggest set ever in Lollapalooza’s history, across its global festivals.
Lollapalooza, originally launched as a touring event in 1991, has since expanded internationally, hosting festivals in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Sweden, France, and India. This year’s headliners included Blink 182, The Killers, SZA, Megan Thee Stallion, and Melanie Martinez.
Roan, originally slated for a smaller stage at Lollapalooza, was moved to the main stage due to skyrocketing interest in the weeks before the event, with her set times swapped with Kesha’s, according to a Lollapalooza representative.
This isn’t the first time the breakout star has exceeded expectations—quite literally.
In June, Roan attracted such a huge audience at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee that organizers had to relocate her set to a larger stage to accommodate the massive turnout. This followed her standout performances at Coachella in Indio, Calif., and Governor’s Ball in New York, where she gained viral attention for her political statements made while donning a drag-inspired Statue of Liberty costume with full-body green paint.
Next on Roan’s agenda is Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park next weekend. Although not initially slated as a headliner, San Francisco organizers would be wise to brace for a major crowd.
