Amazon Web Services Outage creates a significant disruption in its North Virginia (US-East-1) region, resulting in service unavailability that lasted nearly four hours. This outage affected thousands of customers and impacted more than 100 AWS services, including popular offerings like AWS Management Console, Amazon SageMaker, AWS Glue, Amazon Connect, AWS Fargate, and Amazon GuardDuty.

Between 11:49 AM PDT and 3:37 PM PDT on Tuesday, Amazon Web Services Outage caused increased error rates and latencies, leading to operational disruptions for users in the US-EAST-1 region. The root cause of the Amazon Web Services Outage was traced back to an issue with a subsystem responsible for capacity management for AWS Lambda, a serverless compute service provided by AWS.

According to AWS, the subsystem problem directly affected customers, including through the API Gateway, and also indirectly impacted other AWS services. As a result, customers faced difficulties signing into the AWS Management Console, the central interface for managing AWS services.

Even AWS’s website and server connections were affected during the Amazon Web Services Outage, as reported by Downdetector.com. Customers who attempted to contact AWS Support encountered failures, which disrupted their ability to initiate calls or chats with the customer support department.

The AWS Lambda subsystem issue was resolved by 1:41 PM PDT, and the company successfully completed the entire recovery process, including the processing of backlogs, by 3:37 PM PDT.

This isn’t the first time the North Virginia region has experienced service disruptions. In December 2021, a similar Amazon Web Services Outage occurred due to network overload. Additionally, the AWS region in Ohio faced two outages last year, highlighting the challenges that can arise in maintaining stable cloud services.

Numerous prominent AWS customers were affected by the recent outage in the North Virginia region. Companies such as the Boston Globe, The Verge, Southwest Airlines, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s EDGAR system all experienced service disruptions, according to a Reuters report.
