Mathew Rosengart, the attorney who represented Britney Spears for three years and played a pivotal role in securing her release from a long-standing conservatorship, has concluded his representation of the singer, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Rosengart’s departure follows the resolution of all legal disputes related to Spears’ conservatorship, marking a significant milestone in her regained independence from the court’s oversight.
Recently, under Rosengart’s guidance, Spears reached a settlement with her father, effectively ending their contentious legal battle over financial matters that persisted even after the conservatorship officially ended in November 2021.
With the legal matters settled and all loose ends tied up, Rosengart, a partner at Greenberg Traurig in Los Angeles, is shifting his focus to his other clients’ extensive legal needs, the source added.
Upon reaching the settlement, Rosengart expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Spears, whom he described as an iconic artist deserving of protection and support.
Rosengart, a former federal prosecutor, was hired by Spears in 2021 to replace her court-appointed attorney, playing a pivotal role in her fight for autonomy from the conservatorship that had been in place since 2008.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Spears has credited Rosengart for his role in advocating for her rights and liberties, particularly against the oversight exercised by her father, Jamie Spears, who managed her finances and medical decisions for over a decade.
In June 2021, Britney Spears delivered a powerful testimony in court, pleading with the judge to end her conservatorship, describing it as abusive and stating, ‘I just want my life back. It’s been 13 years and it’s enough.’ She detailed restrictions imposed on her, including being forced into tours, limitations on personal choices like consuming coffee, and being prescribed lithium which she said affected her significantly.
In July of the same year, Spears testified again, tearfully urging the judge to remove her father from the conservatorship. This pivotal moment led to the court granting her the ability to hire her own attorney, Matthew Rosengart, to handle her case.
Within just two months of Rosengart taking on her representation, the court suspended Spears’ father as conservator, ultimately terminating the conservatorship less than two months later.
Rosengart, known for his representation of Hollywood figures such as Sean Penn and Steven Spielberg, became a central figure in Spears’ legal battle, earning praise and admiration from the #FreeBritney movement. He was affectionately referred to by supporters as ‘RosenGod,’ as Spears’ case garnered global attention and sparked countless memes and social media posts.
Spears and Rosengart developed a unique bond beyond the typical attorney-client relationship. When she hired him, Spears expressed gratitude on Instagram, writing, ‘Now with real representation today … I feel GRATITUDE and BLESSED!!!!’ In February 2022, she shared a photo of them in matching pink outfits, praising him with the caption, ‘This man has turned my life around.’
In her memoir ‘The Woman in Me,’ published last year, Spears credited Rosengart’s legal strategy for her court victory, recalling that he insisted she deserved the credit for the outcome.
Since the termination of her conservatorship, Britney Spears has been active in her personal and professional life. She published her memoir and released two singles, collaborating with Elton John on “Hold Me Closer” and will.i.am on “Mind Your Business.” Additionally, she married and subsequently divorced fitness trainer and actor Sam Asghari.
During Spears’ legal battles, serious allegations were levied against her father in court filings, accusing him of financial misconduct and abusing his role as conservator. Jamie Spears consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that every action taken was approved by the court. When Spears settled with her father in April, his attorney, Alex Weingarten, expressed a desire for a trial to clarify matters, stating, ‘Jamie would love nothing more than to disclose all of the details and has nothing to hide, but that is not the situation unfortunately.’ Weingarten emphasized Jamie Spears’ love for his daughter and his commitment to protecting her interests.
Spears sought closure in her prolonged legal ordeal. Matthew Rosengart, her attorney, told CNN in April, ‘As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with court in this matter.’ He added, ‘Although the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, her wish for freedom is now truly complete.
