The acclaimed actress, director, and producer Désirée Nosbusch recently premiered her first fiction feature film, Poison, marking a significant milestone in her career. The film, starring renowned actors Tim Roth and Trine Dyrholm, made its highly anticipated debut at a major film festival, captivating audiences with its emotional depth and raw storytelling.

Adapted from the Dutch play Gif, Poison explores the reunion of a couple who cross paths again a decade after a devastating tragedy. The gripping narrative unfolds through an intense, real-time interaction at a cemetery, drawing viewers into the characters’ world of grief, love, and unresolved emotions. The film received an overwhelming reception, resonating deeply with its audience.

Dyrholm, known for her compelling performances, emphasized the importance of collaboration in bringing such powerful stories to life. “We can’t perform without generosity. It’s about working with inspiring and dedicated people, and that’s exactly what I found in Désirée and Tim,” she shared.

Roth echoed the sentiment, expressing his enthusiasm for working with first-time feature directors. “I love seeing new directors evolve creatively. Désirée was extraordinary in her vision and execution,” he said.

For Nosbusch, securing two acclaimed actors for her debut was a dream come true. “I’ve been a fan of Tim Roth my entire life, and Trine is one of the most exceptional European actresses of our time. To have both of them trust me with this project is beyond incredible,” she said.

Nosbusch’s journey with Poison began over a decade ago when she first encountered the play. “I was offered the role of Her in a theater production, and I instantly fell in love with the story. It stayed with me, like a melody I couldn’t forget,” she recalled. Bringing the film to life, however, was a long and challenging process, taking nearly eight years to secure funding.

A multi-talented artist, Nosbusch has made a name for herself in acting, producing, and hosting. She credits her role in the hit thriller series Bad Banks for opening new doors in her career. “That show gave me a second wind and the opportunity to be more selective about my projects. I see myself as a storyteller, whether it’s through acting, directing, or any other medium.”

Nosbusch also shared valuable wisdom she received from a legendary filmmaker during her time studying at UCLA. “Mel Brooks once told us: ‘If a story sticks to you like honey and you can’t shake it off, then you have to tell it.’ That’s exactly how I felt about Poison. It stayed with me, and I knew I had to bring it to the screen.”

While Poison has yet to secure a U.S. distributor, its success on the festival circuit has been undeniable. Nosbusch felt an immense sense of pride premiering the film in her homeland. “Everyone kept asking, ‘When do we get to see this film?’ The expectations were high, but seeing the audience’s reaction made it all worth it.”

With a powerful debut behind her, Nosbusch has proven herself as a formidable director with a unique storytelling voice. As she continues to explore new creative avenues, the impact of Poison is set to linger in the hearts of audiences worldwide.
